ReplyAre people aware that Toms River isn't allowing flooded out homeowners to sell their homes 'as is' unless the new buyers pledge to raise the house? Bunch of deals have fallen through because of that. Interested to know if anyone else has heard these stories?

Judi - sad to say but landlords who rent to Sec8 tend to have to deal with more damage when a tenant moves out. I spent summers as a teenager fixing up apartments between renters (painting, cleaning, etc) and the ones from section 8 were pretty consistently treated more roughly (probably because it wasn't their own money on the line in the security deposit). That landlord, however, liked renting to Sec8 because he got paid and never had to chase the tenant for the rent.

We did house our displaced people. But it's going on 6 months now - at what point do you have to shut off the gravy train and force people to figure out a solution? Because if you don't there are some people who will always just stay where they are. Furthermore, I have zero sympathy for the it's too small, too far, too something complaint. I didn't get everything I wanted when I bought my house - didn't get the town I really wanted to live in, didn't get the two car garage, didn't get the fourth bedroom - most people that aren't super-wealthy do have to make compromises to afford thier housing. That Section 8 holders have to do the same is not exactly a tragedy.

Tom & (Sue - seriously? Tom - as much as you might want to blame Bush and Cheney for this (they don't call it Bush Derangement Syndrome for nothing) there is no possible way they have anything to do with Biggert-Waters (sponsored by a liberal Republican from Ill and a lefty from Ca, voted for by Lautenburg & Mendendez, and signed by Obama) and even less possibility they planned to stick it to Sandy victims. Get a grip.
And Sue - see above who signed Biggert-Waters. You help our side exactly zero with the partisan crap. I'm on your side and you make me want to root against you.
I say we stick with calling Biggert-Waters a mistake with unintended consequences and keep pushing for repeal. Your attitude only makes everyone dig in in their own corner.

your embassassing yourself. It's called Biggert Waters. Obama signed it. Both our (Democrat) Senators voted for it. Your "ultra-conservative" nonsense just advertises your ignorance. What's more likely - a cabal of mid-west "ultra-conservatives" fooled all those Dems into voting for it (never mind that small body of water known as the Mississippi River) or our elected representatives passed legislation without understanding the implications of what they were doing?
Sometimes things that are so destructive we assume they must be malicious are just due to simple incompetence. And frankly, given the last 10 years in this country that explanation seems most likely.

clamdigger - this isn't changing building building codes for new construction like they did in (for example) Florida. This is retroactively changing building codes for existing structures - and ruinious flood insurance rates if you don't comply.
I don't know of any example where existing structures were expected to change to accomodate new codes. This is unchartered territory - and it's unreasonable of the government to impose these new rules on us without compensation.

Silvertonmom - I'm perfectly willing to believe the TR government is nearly as incompetent on the mainland as they are in Ortley. The question is why you are so willing to take it quietly?

all a delay accomplishes is introducing more uncertainty and further delaying the building process. They need to repeal Biggert-Waters and come up with a sensible way to pay for Katrina.
It's almost like the folks in Washington just pass and sign bills when they have no idea what's in them.
