ReplyRaising all houses may not be the smartest way to go. We were saturated by water but many storms are wind driven. The higher up you go, the more likely that wind can scoop your house off of any pilings dreamed of.
This is a decades' old situation that is constantly being studied by the American Association of Architects and also by structural engineers. There is a balance that must be found and the broad brush painting of FEMA's zones is primarily based on their not all that good experience with southern, masonry built houses.
They are NOT up-to-date on the east coast's main methods of building. This is a rush job based on obsolete and inaccurate data and their goal really is to either push us out or bail them and the NFIP out for the billions of dollars they already owe the Treasury for their gross mishandling of Katrina.
Towns should simmer down and find some humility and start to read about what has and is going on. Height is not the entire solution: there really isn't one.
With that height, FEMA wants to get rid of breakaway walls and vent systems which we have in our house and which worked perfectly. We came through dry but now FEMA would have us remove those controls. They don't know what they are doing!

Our Governor is mainly found seeking photo opportunities. He cleaned off his desk to run again and gave FEMA all of his power and responsibilities. He does NOT work for anyone except himself. Sad.

I just wrote to him pointing our your awareness that Pa. residents invade this shore and often own property here. The problem is I'm not sure that someone as tone deaf as Senator Toomey [translate: For Me], has the skills to read.
His vote is a disgrace and shows how little he understands of what is going on.

I beg to differ. This young man is trying to continue the good work his mother did but he is going to have to have people around him that prevent him from being used by the likes of our Governor who is always in search of a photo op. The Governor wants those cash registers running and is not interested at all in the disgusting limbo thousands of people have been living in for almost 8 months. We are the people and the neighborhoods he hides.
Harry does seem to genuinely care about folks in trouble and the media following him - as they did Diana - can enable people from further away than these few counties to actually witness the horrible situation so many of us are living in. I am glad he visited but ashamed at how his good intentions were manipulated by our self-serving politicians.

The lunacy of the Governor's office steering that compassionate young man's attention away from the profoundly real problems of this area is beyond me.
Prince Harry could have brought those tv cameras to the desperate who I believe he would want to see but the "Everything's fine in River City" attitude pushed in our faces by the Governor at every turn squandered an opportunity to show this nation how awful our situation is.
Tone deaf is the nicest thing I can find to say about this Governor who apparently wants us to vote for him again.

Does anyone know if that toxic pipeline under the Bay was ever completely removed? Closing it wouldn't have been enough and now we are about to watch AshBritt dredge this same Bay.
