A Full Fair Haven Meeting Agenda

Agenda includes: a major donation, Fair Haven Day talk, hires and more

Tonight's Fair Haven Borough Council meeting agenda is flush with borough celebration plans and accolades, among other things. The following items are slated for review at the 7 p.m. meeting at Borough Hall: • Remember Alabama Power's $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross in Fair Haven's name for Hurricane Sandy recovery? Mayor Ben Lucarelli says that tonight is the night that borough officials will present the check (or checks, as it may be broken down into two) to Red Cross principals. • On the workshop agenda is also a planned discussion about Fair Haven Day, slated for June. The Fair Haven Centennial Day was so successful that officials were inundated with requests to make the barbeque at Fair Haven Fields a regular annual event. …

Threat of Flooding High in Rumson

Residents in low-lying areas who haven't evacuated should head to RFH High

The streets of Rumson and Fair Haven were quiet early Monday afternoon, with businesses largely closed, motor vehicle traffic light and residents hunkered down in their homes or shelter. However, the force of Hurricane Sandy is unsettling the Navesink, as docks and marinas start to take on water. The prospect of a river surge concerns Rumson Mayor John Ekdahl. "What's really surprising us... some of the areas we evacuated (Sunday) were flooding at low tide," Ekdahl said. Rumson experienced 12-foot tides early Monday, the mayor said. "We came near records this morning." As Sandy tracks to impact southern New Jersey perhaps more significantly than Monmouth County and points north, the mayor is largely concerned with "significantly higher …

FH Finding Fixes for School Traffic Woes

Long- and short-term solutions for Sickles safety issues interwoven with Fair Haven's Willow Street road project

Traffic. It’s a problem of ever-increasing concern in Fair Haven, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times, and especially lately at the Voila L. Sickles School. There has been extra vigilance by police. There have been warnings. There have been pleas. Yet, careless drivers continue to drive carelessly. Speeders continue to speed. Cars and SUVs continue to clog up school-front roads, parents competing for the premier place to park and usher kids in and out. And, in the middle of all if this clutter and calamity is a segment of the student population walking and biking to school. The result: imminent pedestrian and cyclist safety issues. So, officials were driven to put the pedal to the metal in coming up with short- and long-…

Fair Havenite Wins Women's 5K

Over 500 runners took to the streets through Little Silver on Sunday for the 19th annual event. Share your photos from the day on Patch!

Timing, as they say, is everything. And, Fair Haven's Cate Robbie's timing was just right as she finished next door's Little Silver Classic 5K in the women's division with a time of 16:59. At Sunday's 19th running of the Classic, held at Red Bank Regional High School, more than 500 runners competed for the best time in the 5K portion of the event and kids of all ages competed in the 1-Mile Fun Run and Kiddie Dash. While grey skies and chilly temperatures greeted runners at the starting line, the rain that had been forecast for Sunday held off until all races had been completed with drops beginning to fall as cars pulled away. Pete Forgach, 24, of Long Branch crossed the finish line first with a time of 16:11. And Robbie, 31, was not far …

Tweedle Dee: A Wonderland of Antiques

New antique shop in Fair Haven features Muddy-Puddles ‘Camp for Grown-ups’

It's not Alice's wonderland, but for antiques enthusiasts, a trip down the rabbit hole into a fantasy 'tiquing world at Tweedle Dee Antiques & Such can be a dream venture come true. Owned by Fair Haven resident Laura Kent, the shop opened its doors in mid-August at 810 River Road, Fair Haven. The 1,500-square-foot rented space formerly housed The Berry Patch and Barefoot Bride, and although additions were done during the 1960s, the building dates from the 1800s, ideal for an antique shop. “My customers tell me the shop is more like a home — cozy, warm and inviting — so I am thrilled with that,” said Kent. Kent grew up locally, eventually settling in Fair Haven. The choice of her hometown for Tweedle Dee was a “no-brainer” for Kent, she …

Sunday's Cycle into Tour de Fair Haven

A look at some of the scenes from the annual event

WhiiiiiiiiiiizzzzZZZZ! That was the sound that rang in onlookers' ears as cyclists raced past them at the start and finish line in front of the firehouse on River Road for the 2012 Tour de Fair Haven on Sunday. The annual event attracted avid cyclists and pros from all over. This year, it was part of the borough's centennial celebration. All proceeds from the race fund the year-long calendar of centennial events and Fair Haven bicycle safety programs. The borough is in the process of implementing a Complete Streets program, a state Department of Transportation initiative dedicated to making streets more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly. Where you there? Take a look at Patch's glimpse into the day in the above photo gallery. Be sure to …

Car Crashes onto Fair Haven Property

The accident happened around 9:08 Saturday morning near the Harding Road intersection.

Emergency workers had to remove the driver of a 2009 black Honda Accord after the car veered off Prospect Avenue in Red Bank Saturday morning and crashed onto a Fair Haven property, crasing into its fence. The driver, James Mayer, 53, of Hillsboro, NJ, was traveling east on Harding Road and missed the turn and struck a cement slab, according to Red Bank Police Sgt. Robert Gannon. The driver attempted to back out and continue down Prospect and "lost control" and crashed into a fence that separates the yard of a Fair Haven home from the road, said Gannon. Bernadette Dunphy, who's lived in that house for 23 years, said she was out dropping off recycling when the accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. She said she pulled in and saw emergency …

The tremendous black box monmouth county engineers installed obscures the vision of the driver and creates a blind spot. Unfortunately, the opportunity for future accidents exist until the equipment is permanently placed underground. This is a major concern at other intersections in Monmouth County.   more ›
