Groups gathered to learn and offer input on plans for a replacement.
The stage is set to move forward with a revamp or replacement of the 60-year-old failing Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge; but, plans are only conceptual proposals at this point and a price tag on the project is far from being set. If all goes according to plan, though, needs could be assessed and pinpointed, estimates generated and federal funds freed for construction to start in 2016. Technically, the project is in what has been dubbed the concept development phase. As part of that phase, stakeholders sat down with state and county officials, architects, environmentalists and engineers at Holy Cross School in Rumson on Tuesday to gauge “draft concept” preferences from 10 different options. The county has released a detour map for the project that is expected to last through January 2013.
Monmouth County officials announced on Tuesday that the long-anticipated project to replace an aging bridge along Little Silver's Seven Bridges Road, just outside of Red Bank's borders, will begin July 9. The work, which is expected to wrap up in January 2013, will require a detour for all motor vehicles traveling the stretch of roadway between Rumson Road and Little Silver Point Road. County officials have advised that motorists should use the signed detours and expect travel delays throughout the project. Specifically, northbound traffic on Seven Bridges Road will detour west on Silverside Avenue to Branch Avenue and then be routed north on Branch Avenue to Rumson Road. Regardless of decision on replacement, the bridge closes Monday, October 17 for up to 8 months of repairs.
Both Rumson and Fair Haven have newly adopted resolutions stating their desire for a low-lying replacement for the Oceanic Bridge. Although they already had resolutions in place that stated their wants, they were over 4 years old. "Those resolutions were kind of stale so we basically updated it and made it fresh,” said Rumson Mayor John Ekdahl. Rumson adopted their new ordinance on September 27. “Almost everybody is in favor of the lower option,” said Ekdahl based the attendance at the meeting held in Rumson on September 19 to discuss the bridge with county officials. Why are they starting this work during the busiest time of the year in this area????? Also detour or no detour there should be a traffic light at Rumson rd and Branch as well as White rd. I hope the reconsider on making the traffic lights permanent. I live on White rd close to the intersection of Branch and the light has helped traffic flow.   more ›
