Former Corrections Department Official Sentenced In Bribery Scheme

Neptune man will spend 46 months in prison

A former high-ranking official with the state Department of Corrections was sentenced Thursday to nearly four years in prison on extortion and bribery charges, authorities said. Lydell B. Sherrer, 53, of Neptune, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Joel A. Pisano, to 46 months in prison, three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $22,500 in restitution for soliciting bribes from corrections department employees in exchange for keeping their jobs, according to the release. The sentence stems from a 12-count extortion and bribery indictment charging Sherrer — a one-time assistant commissioner of the Division of Programs and Community Services — with soliciting money from five separate employees or former corrections …

Inspector Faces Bribery Charges

Man allegedly accepted bribe while working for soil conservation district

A man from the Manasquan Park section of Wall Township is facing charges in Monmouth County Superior Court after he allegedly accepted a bribe from an undercover officer while working in an official capacity for the Freehold Soil Conservation District. John Tonon, 51, of Lakewood Road, is charged in relation to an Oct. 26 incident in Hazlet in which authorities say he accepted $700 from an undercover officer of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, to influence his work as a soil conservationist and inspector. According to a release from the Prosecutor's Office, the bribe was intended to expedite the permitting process for a recently built home. It would be foolish to believe that this "undercover" officer just happened to be there to become a foil in a bribe situation. There had to be complaints, reports, tips, etc. about this man's "Official Conduct" before he was caught.
