Snapshot: Veterans Day in Rumson

Ceremony held at Victory Park under sunny skies

It was a moment of honor and remembrance in the calm after the Sandy storm. Rumson residents, officials and veterans gathered Monday morning to pay tribute to those who have served and are serving the country. The small crowd, including military personnel and scouts, gave thanks. Take a look at the photo gallery above for a glimpse into the event. If you were there and have any photos you would like to add and/or tributes, feel free to do so.

I agree with Carl. This is only 1 hour out of the year that we in Rumson can thank our Servicemen and women. 1 hour! The service isn't even that long!! At least a few of us were there but it needs and should be much more.   more ›

A Day for Honoring Vets in Fair Haven

Ceremony was conducted on Sunday, as usual

It was the first time the sun shone brightly since Hurricane Sandy struck; and, Fair Haven's Veterans Day ceremony was held in step with the borough's traditional annual plan on Sunday. Several showed for the brief 11 a.m. ceremony, replete with memorial floral wreath dedications, honor and solemnity. Take a look at the photos above for a glimpse into the ceremony.

A message from the Borough of Rumson: Rumson will honor all veterans at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12,  in a service at Victory Park, Rumson.    The ceremony will feature veterans, Mayor John Ekdahl, members of the Rumson Borough Council, Captain Dan Edwards, formerly of the U.S Army 1st Cavalry Division, and several guest speakers.  Owen Doherty, of Rumson, will sing the National Anthem.

Veterans Day: Traditionally Sunday, Celebrated Monday

No matter the calendar date, it is a day of remembrance and thanks.

Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know? This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12.  The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the …

FH to Honor Vets in Sunday Service

Despite Sandy aftermath difficulties, the annual ceremony will be held

"Absolutely" was the response officials gave when asked if there would still be a Veterans Day ceremony in Fair Haven this year, following the havoc Hurricane Sandy wreaked on the area. The service, which is a staple every year, will take place at Memorial Park, at the corner of River and Fair Haven roads, at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All are invited and encouraged to attend the tribute to veterans nationwide. Last year, at a memorial dedication at Thorne Middle School, Middletown, Battle of the Bulge survivors reunited. Watch the above video, filmed by Emmy-nominated Steve Rogers, for some rare footage of some of those who are part of a dying breed dubbed The Greatest Generation. Thank you to all of our vets!
