TELL US: Are You Curious About Future of Fort Monmouth?

The Army is slowly releasing its grip on 1,126 acres of prime Monmouth County real estate. Want to know what's happening to it?

Refurbished historic homes, new eateries, sports facilities, a health club, an office park, those are all among the likely new uses for the former Fort Monmouth. Right now the former Army post is more than 1,000 acres of property right smack in the middle of one of the most desirable areas of Monmouth County. But if you are like many residents who live close to the fort, you have no earthly idea what's happening over there. Local governments, schools and the county have all put dibs on their favorite properties. Big business has already secured one plot. Small businesses also are getting in on the action. Redevelopers say they expect to see significant redevelopment of the fort within 10 years — that's new homes, businesses, recreation …

UPDATE: High Speed Chase Leads To Crash, Two Deaths

Car reportedly fled after being stopped by police

Two occupants of a car that was involved in a high-speed chase with the Tinton Falls police late Wednesday night are dead after a crash in the borough. Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Richard Incremona said that two Tinton Falls police officers stopped a 2008 Subaru Impreza with three male occupants on Shafto Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. When one of the officers approached the vehicle, he spotted a .380 semi-automatic handgun in the car, the assistant prosecutor said. Incremona said the officer grabbed the gun and immediately alerted the other officer about the gun. The driver then fled the scene at speeds "in excess of 100 miles per hour," as the two police officers pursued, Incremona said. The driver then lost …

Man Who Allegedly Ran Bogus 9/11 Charity Has Long Criminal Record

Manahawkin and Tinton Falls men sued for their part in alleged scheme

A man accused this week of promoting a bogus 9/11 victims' charity has a long criminal history involving convictions on sex and theft offenses. Thomas J. Scalgione, 40, of Manahawkin has been convicted on seven counts of criminal acts, including: criminal sex acts; credit card fraud; forgery; and computer related theft, according to the state Department of Corrections. Scalgione and Mark Anthony Niemczyk, 66, of Tinton Falls were accused this week of promoting the charity by driving around in a pickup truck painted with the names of first responders who perished. The same truck transported a tower piece recovered from the wreckage of Ground Zero to Barnegat last year to serve as a memorial for those who died. Through the efforts of …

Co-op Brings Organic Produce to Monmouth County

You've heard of farm to table. How about farm to garage? Find out how your neighbors have been getting their share of organic food.

If you thought Whole Foods was the only way to get fresh, organic produce, then you need to stop by Robin Wallace's garage. Like most suburban garages, Wallace's is home to a collection of strollers, skateboards and power tools. But two mornings a month it's also an organic grocery where Wallace plays host to a pod from the Purple Dragon-Co-op, a Glen Ridge-based company offering organic foods at near wholesale prices. Long before the sun rises on a Wednesday morning, this Oceanport mother of three receives a bulk delivery of fruits and vegetables from Purple Dragon, which she divides into 14 equal shares in very unglamorous reused cardboard boxes and plastic bags. Often there is still some dirt on the lettuce and the fruits lack the …

Undisclosed Federal Agency Could Bring Jobs to Fort Property

Redevelopers may vote to approve initial stages of lease process which could generate local jobs.

It's still a bit of a mystery but apparently an unnamed federal agency may be setting its sights on vacant space at Fort Monmouth.  If all goes as planned, this week redevelopers will kick off a lease process with the US General Services Administration (GSA) to locate a federal agency at building 2525, a 86,000 square-foot office building located in the Tinton Falls section of Fort Monmouth. GSA is responsible for meeting the space requirements of federal agencies. Bruce Steadman, executive director of the Fort Monmouth Revitalization Authority (FMERA), would not give any information about what federal agency would eventually locate at the site since it is part of confidential real estate negotiations. He did say, however, that the lease …

Guess the negotiations broke down with the "mystery" agency. Was this perhaps the VA IT contracting group that is already on Industrial Way? If so, then it won't mean hundreds of additional jobs, since they have already expanded and will be merely relocating to cheaper, more appropriate space. Will CommVault also be getting Building 2525 as part of their deal?   more ›
