Fair Haven officials encourage outdoor eating, use of new sidewalks
Spring has sprung and sidewalk seating at Fair Haven eateries is starting to sprout around town. Tavolo Pronto was recently granted its permit to have dining tables outside, which last year were on the side of the Italian eatery. Fairwinds Deli has applied for its permit, but, according to Mayor Ben Lucarelli, must still "satisfy some minor convenants of its developer's agreement" before the permit can be approved. The old Java Stop turned Booskerdoo has always had a few tables outside for the warmer months and its owners are expected to apply, but have not yet. The coffee shop is slated to open soon. Owners of Balderose Fine Foods, which replaced Gourmet Picnic, at the corner of Fair Haven and River roads, told Patch they were anxious to …

There are still places to get some sweet desserts and dinners in the Rumson-Fair Haven area post-Valentine's Day
Feeling a little forlorn about Valentine's Day plans flattened? There are likely some sweet leftovers and places in the Rumson-Fair Haven area to treat yourself to a feast alone or with a good friend the day after. Pedaling backwards and starting with the sweets first to go with your morning cup of coffee — that's right, you deserve it — you can take a ride over to Cups & Cakes in Rumson or Tavolo Pronto in Fair Haven. As of last night, Tavolo had some prime treats baked by Patty, of course, still quite fresh and tasty: red velvet cupcakes, cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries, among others. Go grab one before they're gone. We did. Yum! Or you could head over to Cups & Cakes in Rumson. Word has it that there are plenty of good "…

Between Rumson and Fair Haven there are several places to stop for coffee. Where do you go and where will you go in the future?
When the windows at Fair Haven's Java Stop became blanketed with makeshift brown packaging paper shades and the coffee was no longer on in the morning, townies and lovers of a good cup of Joe started foaming at the mouth like a latte machine. While the area between the two small peninsula boroughs of Rumson and Fair Haven is saturated with standard morning coffee klatch stops, each has his or her own habitual stop. Not only did the roughly decade-old staple Java Stop close its doors and cut off a morning brew option, but Gourmet Picnic, a couple blocks away on River Road, shut down, too. Creatures of habit, the small-town fans of both places have found themselves looking for a replacement place to stop for coffee. And there's not all bad …

Looking for a place to go for food, goods? We know where you can get what you need in the area.
With electric restoration on the grim side in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, people are hard pressed to find a place where they can park themselves for a few minutes, grab something to eat, get some supplies or just get out and socialize. Even without electricity, there are quite a few eateries operating with gas stoves and other business open for limited times and selling some needed goods, like candles and medicine. In Fair Haven, Acme is open and continuing to operate on a generator with refrigerated and freezer goods for sale. Tavolo Pronto has no electricity, but is cooking on gas and serving up some sandwiches, pizzas, baked goods (made off premise) and coffee. Fairwinds Deli is open until roughly 3 p.m. daily now. Sansu Japanese …

Olympic swimmer Conner Jaeger loves Tavolo's chicken parm
On the cusp of his swim of a lifetime, Fair Haven Olympic swimmer Connor Jaeger is in London and probably not thinking much about his favorite meal. But, there are friends and fans back home who cannot help but wonder if he had his favorite things on Friday after he swam and qualified to swim for an Olympic medal on Saturday afternoon. As Jaeger's mom, Bernadette, told Patch, her son has always loved some "chicken parm and a side of nap" between meets. She also said that Fair Haven's Tavolo Pronto was her safe haven for everything from her son's favorite dish to a cup of coffee and good conversation. Judging from the storefront displays and social media comments, the Tavolo staff could not be more proud of Connor Jaeger. As an ode to the …

Officials are in favor of the concept to boost Fair Haven business, despite doubters
The weather is fitting for al fresco dining and Tavolo Pronto is all set for it. Since being approved for Fair Haven’s first shot at a sidewalk café permit, tables and umbrellas are set up outside on, you could say, the side … walk of the eatery. They’re actually on the side in the alleyway of the popular stop for homemade Italian breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Safety of the placement of the of the outdoor tables was called into question at the most recent Borough Council meeting Monday night but fears were quickly allayed by Police Chief Darryl Breckenridge. A resident questioned whether or not the set-up in the small roadway in between the two businesses (consignment shop on the other side) would deter emergency access, if and when it …

The Fair Haven Council unanimously passed a resolution to allow Tavolo Pronto to have a Sidewalk Café permit.
Tavolo Pronto patrons will now be able to enjoy their coffee, sandwiches, salads, pizza, and dinners outdoors. On April 23, the Fair Haven Council unanimously agreed to approve a Sidewalk Café Permit for the restaurant. According to Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli the request for outdoor dining was looked into by the town’s zoning officer and an inspection was made prior to Monday's meeting. “We are looking to promote outdoor dining at all of our restaurants that are capable and have the area to do it,” said Lucarelli. Tavolo Pronto Owners Arturo and Patti Balderas were present at the Council meeting. Prior to the vote, Councilman Jerome A. Koch addressed the audience. “The privilege of having a sidewalk café comes with an obligation to keep it …

Businesses with power fed hundreds of residents without it. Businesses with outages lost food and revenue.
After Irene swept across the East Coast thousands were left without electricity. Some business owners in Rumson and Fair Haven are thankful for their power; others not so fortunate are starting to feel the pressure. “We are glad to have had power through the whole storm,” said Steve Bidgood, owner of Salt Creek Grill in Rumson. “We got to feed a lot of people who didn’t have power on Sunday and Monday night.” Salt Creek Grill was one of the few businesses in Rumson that maintained power through Irene’s rage. Bidgood opened the doors to his restaurant Sunday night and served about 400 dinners to locals who had no power. “Most of my staff was able to make it in,” Bidgood said. “I had to pick up a few staff members in Red Bank since the …
