Deadline to Apply for FEMA, SBA Extended to May 1

Deadline extension applies for homeowner, renter and business registration with SBA

Residents impacted by Superstorm Sandy now have until May 1 to register for individual disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), according to a prepared statement from the governor's office.  The deadline extension also applies for homeowner, renter, and business registration with the Small Business Administration (SBA) for Disaster Loan Assistance. Businesses applying for SBA Economic Injury loans still have until July 31 to apply. The loans are for businesses that did not suffer any physical damage, but lost revenue in Sandy's aftermath. State and federal offiicials have urged all residents and businesses affected by the storm, whether it was through flooding, wind damage or loss of business  revenue, …

State Urges Preparations for Major Coastal Storm to Impact New Jersey

Tonight's commute will be "treacherous," says state Police and Emergency Management

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service, is monitoring a major coastal storm expected to impact the state today and tomorrow.   State emergency management officials anticipate coastal flooding, high wind conditions, snow, sleet, and even blizzard conditions in the northeast corner of the state, according to a prepared statement from state Emergency Management.   The State Emergency Operations Center in West Trenton will be activated at 7 a.m. today, and will remain open as long as necessary to meet anticipated challenging conditions. Foundation awards six grants to organizations in Sandy-battered communities

OceanFirst Foundation’s Relief and Recovery Grant Program is awarding six new grants totaling $93,000 to organizations in Point Pleasant Beach, Toms River and Monmouth County. The recipients are: Ocean Fire Co. #1, Point Pleasant Beach; Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, Toms River; Children’s Home Society, Toms River; Homes for All, Toms River; O.C.E.A.N., Inc., Toms River and United Way of Monmouth County, Farmingdale. Flood Watch, Wind Advisory in Effect for Shore

No snow predicted in mid-week storm, however

It won't be a repeat of the 2010 post-Christmas blizzard, but a coastal storm will bring rain, high winds and the threat of flooding to the Shore area Wednesday into Thursday. A coastal flood watch was in effect for Monmouth and Ocean counties and a wind advisory stretched the entire length of the shoreline from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Rain was forecast to begin falling across the region by 1 p.m., forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly predicted. Wind gusts were forecast to reach up to 40 m.p.h. during the afternoon Wednesday and up to an inch of rain was possible. JCP&L to Continue Working on Outages "As Safety Permits"

Still 74,012 in the dark in Ocean and Monmouth counties

There are currently 28,176 JCP&L customers without power in Ocean County and 45,836 without power in Monmouth County, according to an update on the JCP&L website. Those numbers change constantly as crews continue to work on outages throughout the region. However, the nor'easter starting to move into the area may cause new outages as well as coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service. JCP&L, in a prepared statement, says: "Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has restored power to more than 900,000 of the 1.2 million JCP&L customers affected by Hurricane Sandy, marking five consecutive days where crews have restored at least 100,000 customers per day. Outages to increase as Sandy barrels towards the Shore

Update, 6 p.m.: Outages have reached 126,739 in Ocean County and 120,000 in Monmouth County. --- There are nearly 24,000 reported power outages in Monmouth and Ocean counties as of early Monday afternoon, according to a Jersey Central Power & Light map. As of early Monday afternoon, there were 23,559 outages reported in Monmouth and Ocean. However, there was no way to immediately learn if some without power have not reported it yet because they may have no means of communication without electricity. But according to the information available, the highest number of outages in one town in the two counties was Middletown, with 6,869. Another town with a high number of reported outages was Berkeley in southern Ocean County with 1,848. …

Due to weather conditions, Ocean County College in Toms River is closed Monday and Tuesday. Also, Georgian Court University, in Lakewood, and Brookdale Community College, in Middletown, will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
