Check out what you may have missed
April was a hectic news month, in and out of the Rumson-Fair Haven area. Some of the most popular R-FH Patch stories were tragic on a regional, and even national, level. Others were of very deep local interest — from police to school reports. In the immediate area, the Patch traffic numbers showed that the most-read stories ran the hyperlocal gamut — from police reports of a Rumson break-in, to a principal's resignation, state school assessment report, and progress in Sea Bright after Hurricane Sandy. On a broader spectrum, the three most-read stories involved the funeral of Brandon Holt, the 6-year-old Toms River child who was accidentally shot by a 4-year-old, a local car crash on the parkway, and the simple heads-up on a skywatch for …

Final hearing on a 4.1 percent increase for state's second largest utility
The sixth and final hearing on a request for a rate increase by the state’s second largest utility company met with a mix of praise and criticism for Jersey Central Power & Light Wednesday at Freehold Township’s Town Hall. JCP&L, fresh off widespread criticism for its handling of Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter that followed, is seeking a 4.1 percent increase in the rates it charges its 1.1 million customers – many of whom were without power for up to two weeks after this winter’s storms. In Rumson and Fair Haven, officials have blasted the utility company for its lack of response and poor communication during and after the storms. In response to the company's latest updates on measures taken to improve service, many officials were not …

The school lags among peers in career/college readiness
When it comes to making the academic grade, Deane-Porter School in Rumson sored "very high" on the new NJ School Performance Report — both statewide and among peers. The elementary school, where students in grades pre-kindergarten to three are educated, outperformed 96 percent of similar grade level schools in the Academic Achievement category statwide and 89 percent of its peer schools. That peer group includes those with a student body of similar demographics, such as Fair Haven's Viola L. Sickles School, Little Silver's Point Road and Middletown's Nut Swamp School. The academic grade was scored based on the student body's overall knowledge of language arts and math, as demonstrated in NJ ASK testing results. Schoolwide performance in NJ…

One parent, who did not want to be identified, said that the "texts are flying" over the news. Another reported that, according to the letter sent home, Karas will be taking a position in Jackson. There was no indication that the sudden resignation was tied to any sort of conflict or controversy. Administration was not available for comment as of press time. The letter will be posted as soon as Patch obtains a copy…

Mr. Karas chose to leave to work in a school district closer to his home. There is no bigger story here. Commuting to Rumson has always been an issue for administration & teachers --it's a hike off the parkway and people have found it to be too much in a world where family time is at a premium with longer work hours, etc.   more ›
