Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …
Van and dump truck collided
An accident near Rumson Country Club this afternoon has sent one person to Jersey Shore University Medical Center's Trauma Unit via MONOC medevac helicopter. The call for the accident came in at 1:19 p.m., Rumson Police Chief Scott Paterson said, when a dump truck and multi-passenger van, both traveling eastbound on Rumson Road near Conover Lane, collided. "We believe, but cannot confirm at this point, that the dump truck was attempting to make a right hand turn onto Conover Lane when it struck the multi-passenger van," Paterson said. "The passenger seated in the right front seat of the van was severely injured and transported to Jersey Shore." The medevac helicopter landed at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School football field to …

Closing out National Police week with some memorable moments
As National Police week comes to a close, we look back on some memorable moments in recognition of popular officers in the Rumson-Fair Haven area. Well-liked Fair Haven Police Sgt. Jesse Dykstra was promoted to sergeant not all that long ago. Dykstra was a detective and had risen through the ranks, from dispatcher to special officer to patrolman and up, in record time. He is an R-FH graduate and, as Chief Darryl Breckenridge said, he's known him since he was a kid. Take a look at the never-before-seen video of his promotion. Then there's Fair Haven Patrolman William Laggroteria. He was honored as Fair Haven Officer of the Year. Take a look at why in the video on his recognition. And, in Rumson, let's not forget that when Scott Paterson was…

Rumson's Paint the Town Pink name is Pinkson
It's a sure sign of the May Meridian Health's Paint the Town Pink breast cancer awareness campaign — "Welcome to Pinkson." That's the sign seen hanging on the tennis courts at Victory Park in Rumson just as people get into town. But you won't see any paint. As part of the campaign, officials agreed to allow Meridian representatives come into town, put up the sign, add pink lights to what is the borough Christmas tree, and hang bows on the utility poles along West through East River Road. And businesses were invited to join in and decorate. Rumson officials approved the signs, but specified, at a recent Borough Council meeting, that they'd like to make sure Meridian has the sign and lights removed a week before the town Memorial Day parade…

Measure would have delayed hikes for five more years
An amendment aimed at halting federal flood insurance rate hikes for five years has been blocked in the U.S. Senate. The amendment, introduced by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) was blocked from coming to a vote Tuesday by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA). Amendments in the U.S. Senate require what is known as "unanimous consent" before a vote can take place, meaning a single member can block a vote from occurring. Toomey told the New Orleans Times-Picayune Tuesday that he objected to changing reforms put in place last year because he supports the move to "diminish the subsidization that occurs now where homeowners in low-risk areas are made to subsidize in high-risk areas." Landrieu, the newspaper reported, said she will likely reintroduce the amendment …
