Tuesday Meal Deals in R-FH Area

There are a couple of good deals in the area for burgers or tacos and a cocktail

Tuesday is not normally a day you'd think of as a day for a good meal and bargain rolled into one. But, in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, there are two places that offer either a gourmet burger package or an innovative taco and cocktail menu item on Tuesday evenings. Woody's Ocean Grille has its Baja Tuesday meals, featuring a menu of $15 tacos or sliders with a choice of Woody's signature Orange Crush or a glass of wine. And, as usual, in Rumson, it's Burger Night at the David Burke Fromagerie in Rumson. The night starts at 5 and ends at 10 p.m. For $25 in the upstairs lounge at the restaurant, patrons can get, for starters, a glass of house wine or beer, a Rocket Arugula Salad, with radicchio, endive, fontina cheese and lemon vinaigrette …

Mihm's: Good Steak, Good Company

Walter Mihm's Steakhouse, on Route 36 in the Leonardo section of Middletown, provides a great combo of community and good eats.

Walter Mihm got booted out of the tenth grade. Just ask his wife, Stanis, about it. She’s proud to tell the story of what ended up catapulting her husband to “I’ll show you” success. Call it his teacher and principal’s “aha” moment. Some 70 years later, the 86-year-old entrepreneur has a year-and-a-half-old new business — Walter Mihm’s Steakhouse. And it’s just the latest in a lifelong string of business ventures of which the Monmouth Beach native and wife Stanis are very proud. Pay a visit. They’ll tell you all about them and more. It’s not just a restaurant. It’s a community experience. “Yes, Walter was kicked out of the tenth grade and he showed them all,” Stanis said merely five minutes after meeting this Patch editor. “His teacher, …

It's a Downtown Burger Bounty

Where there were none as little as six months ago, there are now three burger joints in downtown Red Bank.

When Dhruman Shah signed his lease in January, taking residence in half the space formerly occupied by popular Red Bank combo coffee shop and café Zebu Forno, he saw potential in developing what the downtown lacked. It was a simple idea, yet at the time completely unique to the downtown. He’d provide a burger spot offering fresh food fast. Fast forward 11 months and through some construction and permitting delays and Shah’s Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries has opened its doors on Broad Street, the third burger joint to open downtown in just the last six months. It wasn’t something he was expecting, but, like his burgers, the competition is on. “The area here is really nice and I see that here (in Red Bank) and in surrounding towns there’s…

While it's better to have something in those spots, I'd rather see a store that sells things like cards and practical items like light bulbs. With the closing of the Papery a year or so ago, and most recently Professional Pharmacy, Rite Aid and Foodtown are the only stores left for that. Also, there do not seem to be any bakeries where you can buy a regular cake without ordering it beforehand? …   more ›

Bites Nearby: The Downtown

Bar and Restaurant in Red Bank serves up "Posh Pub Grub" with daily specials and live music.

I had only been to The Downtown one time for a few drinks when it opened.  I remember it being pretty packed with a cover band playing.  The downstairs is mainly tables and the bar, while upstairs, is more of a lounge area.  I met a longtime friend there the other night for a little dinner and time to relax and catch up.  They have happy hour every day until 7 p.m., boasting $5 wine and $2 off beer, and "M.A.D. Wednesdays" featuring local music, local artists, and $3 domestic drafts starting at 8 p.m.  Considering its a hot spot for the Red Bank bar scene, I had honestly never given the food there a thought until my friend highly recommended it. Serving what they consider "Posh Pub Grub," they offer Brunch, Lunch, Dinner and a featured …

Bites Nearby: Bistro Ole

Latin-infused Spanish and Portuguese restaurant in Asbury Park offers freshly-made Sangria with a BYO bottle of wine.

A few years ago I was told to go to Bistro Ole, a latin-infused Spanish and Portuguese restaurant on Main Street in Asbury Park, and I finally had the chance to go there this past Saturday.   We opted to sit outside which ended up being pretty chilly towards the end of the dinner, but as the summer is here and it is warming up, there will undoubtedly be a wait for outdoor seating here.   A small restaurant, they offer perks unique to their cuisine. The restaurant is BYOB, so I bought a cheap bottle of Chilean red wine that they then made into a pitcher of sangria for us, with club soda, apples and oranges.  This was a great way to warm us up quickly while browsing the menu. My friend and I had a hard time deciding what to order, as …

Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene Keeps Health Inspectors Busy

Grocery stores and restaurants inspected after power outages and storm damages.

Monmouth County Health Department inspectors have been busy visiting restaurants and grocery stores that lost power or sustained damage during Hurricane Irene, according to Monmouth County Public Health Coordinator Michael Meddis. “I haven’t seen an inspector in two days. They’ve been out constantly,” he said. The department is responsible for assessing conditions at food establishments in 23 Monmouth County towns. The Monmouth Regional Health Department and five municipal health departments in Colts Neck, Freehold Township, Long Branch, Middletown and Manalapan oversee businesses in the rest of the county. Restaurants and grocery stores may not open unless power, refrigeration, clean water and hot water are present, according to health …

Taking Care of Business

Woody's Ocean Grille Opens With a Grand Slam

Patrons waited for over an hour to be seated during the official opening of the new Sea Bright restaurant on August 29.

Owner Chris Wood met a woman at the door around 7:45 p.m. to help her carry cases of oranges back into the kitchen. After only being officially open for business for less than 5 hours, Woody’s Ocean Grille was out of a key ingredient to their signature drink, the Orange Crush. “I did not expect for us to be this slammed,” said Wood about the opening night. “It is like the perfect storm, part two!” Woody’s took the place of Ichabod’s in Sea Bright at 1 East Church St. off of Ocean Ave. After months of anticipation, and a few set-backs, the restaurant opened with a grand slam. Families and locals, most looking to get out of their homes after being without power for 3 nights after Hurricane Irene, flooded the new restaurant. Many patrons …

Bites Nearby: The Boondocks Fishery

This summer enjoy great fish in funky little lobster shack on the Navesink.

Overview: Located in Red Bank’s Marine Park, Boondocks is a small taste of Key West on the Navesink with an incredible view. Boondocks is only open in the summer, so you only have a couple of months to try this fresh Fishery on the Navasink. Decor:  Boondocks is set up to look like one of those fish shacks you would see down south. It is a small red building that houses the kitchen with a tent. Under the tent are tables with an “Order Here” sign linking the two.  The building itself has old-fashioned fishing signs like “Lobster” and “Crabs,” but the beautiful view of the Navesink River is what makes the décor! The Drinks: Boondocks is B.Y.O.B. and also serves a variety of soft drinks. Appetizers: Appetizers are plentiful here at Boondocks …
