Oceanic Bridge Closure

Oceanic Bridge is Now Open

Bridge opened up to traffic with no prior word from county

Update: Five days earlier than anticipated and on the cusp of a Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge closing, the Oceanic Bridge is open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. As of early evening, all barriers and signage had been removed and traffic was traveling across the bridge.  Monmouth County Spokeswoman Laura Kirkpatrick said tonight that the bridge opened between 3:30 and 4 p.m.; and the reason for no advance notice from the county, she explained, was simply because the crews ended up finishing ahead of schedule, without knowing for certain that all would be wrapped up as soon as it was. "The bridge was scheduled to re-open on Jan. 28," Kirkpatrick said. "Engineers and construction crews ended up completing the work and testing ahead of …

Yes, Oceanic Bridge is Officially Closed

Pedestrian and vehicular traffic cannot traverse the bridge from Rumson or Middletown sides for three weeks, from now until Jan. 28.

A digital sign at the Rumson foot of the Oceanic Bridge said it would be closed "on or about Jan. 7" for three weeks to install slated safety upgrades. And, "on" Jan. 7 it is. The upgrades, which county officials said include new barrier gates and security cameras, have been scheduled for some time now and have nothing to do with a recent embankment mudslide that became reason for a separate closure until a few days ago. And while the contractor, IEW Construction Group, is installing the upgrades, county officials said the closure will be used as a "maximized opportunity" to also fix any damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy. “This work is required because the existing equipment is outdated and replacement parts are becoming more difficult …

Oceanic Bridge Open Now For 9 Days

Emergency closure ended Saturday afternoon

After Monmouth County engineers examined the problem and were able to ensure safety to motorists after a Thursday morning mudslide onto the road before the Oceanic Bridge, the span was again open to traffic on late Saturday afternoon — until Jan. 7. On Jan. 7, the bridge will close again for an estimated three weeks to add upgraded equipment and new gates, or safety updates, according to county officials. The update installation, officials said, had been pending for some time. Officials also stressed that the emergency closure caused by what they deemed a "slope failure" on the banks of the Navesink on the bridge's Middletown side had nothing to do with the pending Jan. 7 closure or the bridge itself, only the land above it.

*UPDATE* Oceanic Bridge Closed: Navesink Banks Slope Failure to Blame

Rumson police issued an alert late Thursday morning.

When it comes to the Oceanic Bridge closure, there are two separate issues that officials say have been somehow lumped together: the present emergency closure; and a coming closure to address what have been "long scheduled upgrades." "They are two entirely separate matters; and, one has nothing to do with the other," Monmouth County Spokeswoman Laura Kirkpatrick said on Friday afternoon. "The present closure is an emergency closure not related to the span itself. Another closure has been slated for Jan. 7 and has been in the works for some time. During that distinctly different closure, safety upgrades will be made, such as the replacement of barrier gates. The timetable (of roughly three weeks) is dependent upon weather conditions." …

We get it the bridge will be closed for scheduled repairs for three weeks. Don't like it be its cheaper then a new bridge. But that still doesn't address the cost of repair for the slope. The owners of the property should pay for all repairs and for the time the county put in to clear the way.   more ›

Bridge Closure Set for Thursday Night

The West Front Street bridge, connecting Red Bank to Middletown, will be closed from Thursday night into Friday morning for maintenance.

Now that the Oceanic Bridge is open, it may be bearing a bit more traffic to and from Middletown tonight through tomorrow. Red Bank's West Front Street Bridge (or Hubbards Bridge) will be closed Thursday night into Friday morning for routine maintenance, Monmouth County officials announced on Tuesday evening. To allow maintenance crews to tighten deck plates on the bridge, the county will temporarily close the bridge that connects the borough to Middletown over swimming river at 9 p.m. Thursday night. The bridge will reopen at 5 a.m. Friday. The closure is weather permitting, county officials said in a release. Vehicles approaching Red Bank from the Middletown side will be detoured down Hubbard Avenue, right onto Navesink River Road, and …

Officials Celebrate Oceanic Opening [Video]

The Oceanic Bridge, which connects Rumson and Middletown, reopened Friday after being closed seven months for repairs.

After seven months of repair work and a gathering, replete with speeches and ribbon cutting, the historic Oceanic Bridge did something this morning it hasn’t done all those months — it opened. Officials, dignitaries and residents of both Rumson and Middletown stood right at the foot of the revamped 98-foot moveable portion of the bridge that serves many surrounding communities as horns sounded and each side of the freshly painted green drawbridge rose, marking the official opening of the span to traffic. Elaine Van Develde wrote this intro and contributed to this report.

Happy Day: The Oceanic Bridge Opens

Officials and residents gathered for the opening ceremony on the bridge

It was a beautiful day for a bridge re-opening. After seven months of repair work and a gathering, replete with speeches and ribbon cutting, the historic Oceanic Bridge did something this morning it hasn’t done all those months — it opened, to many smiles, sighs of relief and gasps of amazement at the sight so close up. Officials, dignitaries and residents of both Rumson and Middletown stood right at the foot of the revamped 98-foot moveable portion as horns sounded and each side of the freshly painted green drawbridge rose, marking the official opening of the span to traffic. “Wow,” Rumson Mayor John Ekdahl said. “After all these years, this is the first time I’ve ever seen it open so close-up. This is a first for me. And, I also got to …

'Pillow Talk': Classic Featuring the Oceanic Bridge

Doris Day/Rock Hudson movie showed the two driving over the bridge

Well, for all of those who guessed that Pillow Talk was the Doris Day/Rock Hudson movie that featured a clip of the stars driving over the Oceanic Bridge ... You're right! And you win ... some Patch swag if you catch up with us at the bridge re-opening today. One person called it ultra correctly, too. The movie was mentioned at a public forum on the bridge revamp in Middletown. Lincroft resident Barbara Thorpe brought it up along with many fond memories of the bridge and a plea to respect and restore its historic significance. Groups have banded together in support of restoring the 72-year-old 1940s art deco style bridge to its original state — keeping the drawbridge section that was just refurbished. The permanent bridge replacement …

Celebration: Oceanic Bridge Re-opening

Does anyone know what classic film, starring Doris Day, featured a clip of her driving over the bridge? Tell us in the comments section below.

The re-opening of the Oceanic Bridge is considered a big reason to celebrate, especially for Rumson, Fair Haven and Middletown residents. And everyone will have their chance to do just that at the official ribbon cutting and re-opening ceremony, hosted by area and Monmouth County Officials, at 10 a.m. on Friday morning on the bridge. The 98-foot drawbridge span of the 2,754-foot-long historic art deco bridge closed in mid-October for a complete overhaul. Work on what is called the bascule (moveable) span included: installation of a new grid deck, replacement and rehabilitation of deck support steel, beams and catwalk. Rust was also removed and metal was sanded and repainted. County officials promised the bridge would re-open in time for …

Oceanic Bridge to Re-Open on Friday

Opening to come a bit sooner than anticipated

It’s news that Rumson, Fair Haven and Middletown residents have anxiously awaited. The Oceanic Bridge, which connects Rumson and Middletown over the Navesink River, is opening sooner than anticipated — mid-morning on Friday, May 18. Recently Monmouth County Engineer Joseph Ettore told Patch that due to the good weather, he anticipated the opening to come before Memorial Day, perhaps sooner. The sooner has become a reality. The drawbridge part, or 98-foot moveable bascule span, of the bridge was deteriorating and in urgent need of repair. A complete revamp of the 2,752-foot-long, 72-year-old art deco style drawbridge will come in the next couple of years. Until then, "this repair work extends the usable life of this bridge," Freeholder …
