Retrospect: R-FH Grad's $1 a Day Job

The job was at the Carlton Theater, now Count Basie. Can you guess how much he made and what the big night was there?

The year was 1939. Native Fair Havenite Ken Lockwood, now 90, was told by his dad, after he graduated from what was Rumson High School then that he needed to go out and get a job. So, that's what Lockwood did. He wandered down Monmouth Street in Red Bank and saw a sign in the window of the then Carlton Theater, now Count Basie, that said "Ushers Wanted." He was hired on the spot for what he thought then was a fortune. The place only showed movies at the time and he took his job very seriously, spending his money on bus fare and candy. Some interesting things happened at the Carlton back in the day. Do you know what dish night is? See how much Lockwood made as a teen and find out what was considered the big night at the Carlton. I remember going to the Carlton many times with my mom as a little girl and then my daddy after I was about 5 or so and we went every weekend to either there, the drivein or Asbury Park theater. We usually sat in the balcony when they had one because daddy smoked cigars and you could only sit upstairs. Those were the days!   more ›

The Lockwoods' Valentine Love Story

A longtime Fair Haven couple still in love after more than half a century this Valentine's Day

Ken and Peg Lockwood still hold hands. It's something that just comes naturally to the longtime Fair Haven couple who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on May 3 of this year. If you ask Ken, he'll proudly tell you at age 90 what year he and Peg met and when they got married, the entire time glancing her way with a warm smile. He never seems to take his eyes off of Peg. He always hears what she's saying, even though he'll tell you he's a bit hard of hearing sometimes. It's instinct. They've just always been in sync. And it has always seemed effortless. Anyone who's known them can tell you they've seen it for themselves. They are what true love looks like. She still brushes his whisps of hair off his brow when they fall over his …

R-FH Patch People of the Year 2012

Take a look back on people who made an impact in the Rumson-Fair Haven area in 2012. Who do you think should be the person of the year?

The year 2012 was a hectic one, though one filled with many special people who did some significant things, hit major milestones, or were just present in the community. Remember these people? Let's take a look back ... • Olympian Connor Jaeger, the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School alumni and Fair Haven resident got the community revved up when he made it to the 2012 Summer Olympic Trials. We followed Jaeger through his Olympic journey, from finding all the signs of support around the area to cheering him on remotely as he swam his way into the Olympics and finally, to his homecoming parade. • Longtime Fair Haven resident Ken Lockwood turned 90, after having lived in the borough for more than 80 years. Ken had some special stories to …

The Lockwoods' Fair Haven Love Affair

Ken Lockwood, 90, tells his story of life in Fair Haven and a bygone era

One of the oldest, last remaining bungalows in Fair Haven was demolished last week. The house, in its original form at 39 Parker Avenue, was inhabited by the Lockwood family for 82 years, from 1930 until a few months ago. Before that, from 1924 to 1930, Ken Lockwood lived down the street at the corner of Parker and Cedar Avenues. He spent 88 years of his life in Fair Haven, from the time he was 2. Right after unforseen circumstances forced Ken and Peggy Lockwood to move to an assisted living facility, Ken sat down with Patch on his 90th birthday to reflect on his time in Fair Haven, a certain celebrity he grew up with, and his deep love for the borough, his neighbors and the street where he lived in the home that Lockwoods built. Take a …

Toppling a Slice of FH Small Home Life

The Lockwood home on Parker Avenue was demolished to make way for larger home. Is there a place left for smaller homes in Fair Haven?

"It'll take about 20 minutes to knock it down," the operator of the front loader was overheard saying as he prepared to demolish one of the oldest bugalows in Fair Haven last Wednesday. And in 20 minutes the meticulous little red house that encapsulated 82 years worth of family history was reduced to pile of shingles, sheet-rock and crumbled cobblestone. As the claw of the truck struck the house, the Tiffany lamp that hung in the dining room swung, the second floor bedroom light flew onto a piece of the remaining roof and a little laundry basket with a stuffed animal neatly tucked on top tumbled to the ground. Pristine, white ruffled Cape Cod curtains still hung on the back door as it was leveled and sullied. The lamp post that, for …

I lived on 56 Parker ave from 1952 when I was born till 1971 when I left for college. I grew up knowing the Lockwoods and the "perfect" little red house. I am not what I would consider an emotional guy but I am severly hurt to know of the houses destruction. They were very nice people and hole will exist in my knowing the physical expression of them is lost forever. How much easier it would have …   more ›

Ken Lockwood's Fair Haven Slice of Life

Ken Lockwood is 90 years old, almost as old as his hometown

Ken Lockwood is almost as old as the town he calls his hometown — Fair Haven. The small, sleepy borough on a peninsula is turning 100 this year; and, Lockwood, who settled there in 1924 at the age of 2, is now 90. And just like the town in which he’s lived a lifetime and loves, he says he’s going for 100. A proud graduate of the then Rumson High School Class of 1939, this kind gentleman and good neighbor, whom so many are accustomed to seeing out and about on the Parker Avenue street where he lives, loves to tell true tales about his beloved Fair Haven and his “associations” there, as he calls them. Ask him anything about the area, going back as far as 90 or so years ago, and Lockwood will have a story for you. And, in telling his tales, …
