Back to School in Rumson, Fair Haven

A reminder of first day schedules, changes and what issues have been key in each district lately

Rumson and Fair Haven students are headed back to school on Thursday; and in each district there will be a host of changes awaiting them. In Fair Haven • At Knollwood, school starts at 8:23 a.m., entering time, and students may arrive as early as 8:15 a.m., but no earlier. Thursday and Friday will be single session days, ending at 12:45 p.m. At Sickles, the single session days end at 12:35 p.m., 10 minutes earlier. • Drivers are reminded to obey the speed limits and to not use Third Street. During school arrival and dismissal times it is to only be used by students riding bikes and walking to and from school. • At the Viola L. First Day of School Might Make You Cry for All the Wrong Reasons

The events of Sept. 11, 2001 have slowly affected even how we start the first day of school.

For whatever the reason, there was a significant period in my life that I rarely cried. I just couldn’t. So of course when something did move me to the point of tears, I’d sit up and take note of the occasion and learned that I can be a sucker for some things. Reading aloud the ending of certain children’s books to my kids, like The Polar Express when the narrator can no longer hear the jingle of the Christmas bell, chokes me up every time. I  bemoan that loss of magic in all of our grown up lives, and am fairly certain I’m reading it more for me than the child I’ve got clamped down by my side. And don’t even think about pressing “play” to watch The Blind Side without passing me a box of Kleenex first. That movie just leaves me feeling so …

Hurricane Irene

School Starts Tuesday for Rumson and Fair Haven Students

Despite delays seen around the area due to the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, schools in Rumson and Fair Haven were fine and school will start Tuesday as scheduled.

While many school districts around Monmouth County are forced to delay the first day of school due to the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, schools in Rumson and Fair Haven will open on Tuesday, September 6 as scheduled. Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School served as a huddle shelter for those residents displaced during Hurricane Irene. The school survived the storm with no major issues and is ready for the first day. "The school is fine, coming through Irene in great shape," said Superintendent Pete Righi. "We will start as scheduled on the 6th."
