FH Gardening 101: Mulch for Everyone!

When a tree falls, a garden grows. That's the silver lining story Fair Haven officials are telling about the abundance of mulch that has become available in the borough due to the myriad felled trees from Hurricane Sandy. Now, with spring planting season on the horizon and plenty of leftover ground up trees from Sandy's aftermath, the borough's Department of Public Works employees have stored the resulting excess of mulch, rather than clearing it, and are in the process of moving it to a giant pile at Fair Haven Fields. Residents and Rumson neighbors are welcome to come and get it for their gardens and landscaping starting the week of April 1. No fooling. Really. Deer Feasting on Fair Haven Community Garden

Volunteers ask for fencing to protect garden.

The deer in Fair Haven are well-fed. That's because they're feasting from a well-tended community garden. Garden keepers tried to fence the white-tailed critters out of depleting their healthy produce with a 7-foot fence. That didn't work, though. It was jumped with the same ease as a kid lifting a leg over a picket fence for one giant stag that was found muching contentedly square in the middle of it over the summer. "With all our modern gardens, this area is a veritable smorgasbord for them," Mayor Ben Lucarelli said. "It's happening at the community garden and all over town. It's not just vegetables, either.
