The budget was adopted Wednesday night
With eight residents in attendance and little criticism, the Fair Haven Board of Education adopted its $12.3 million budget at a special meeting Wednesday night. The budget, which represents a $240,397 hike in spending from last year, held the line right at the state-mandated 2 percent levy cap. It translates into an increase in the Fair Haven schools portion of the tax bill of roughly $137 a year for a property assessed at the borough's average of $650,000. Broken down, the Fair Haven Board of Education tax rate is now, for the 2013-14 school year at 21.08 per $100,000 of assessed property value. Last year the rate was $17.11. Major concession was giving up February break time
Because the wrath of Hurricane Sandy was so unforgiving in its impact to Jersey Shore residents, Fair Haven schools administrators said they were holding their breath in the hope that maybe Gov. Chris Christie would forgive a few make-up school days. “Alas, he has not done that,” Superintendent Kathleen Cronin said at Wednesday night’s Board of Education meeting. “We are (now) required to submit to the county a revised calendar that shows (the originally required) 180 school days.” As a result, the primary sacrifice will be a few February vacation days, with ancillary make-ups worked out in full days where there were halves, added half days where there weren’t any, time made up on holidays not bound by teacher contracts, delayed graduation…

A reminder of first day schedules, changes and what issues have been key in each district lately
Rumson and Fair Haven students are headed back to school on Thursday; and in each district there will be a host of changes awaiting them. In Fair Haven • At Knollwood, school starts at 8:23 a.m., entering time, and students may arrive as early as 8:15 a.m., but no earlier. Thursday and Friday will be single session days, ending at 12:45 p.m. At Sickles, the single session days end at 12:35 p.m., 10 minutes earlier. • Drivers are reminded to obey the speed limits and to not use Third Street. There is only one contested race ... in Rumson
Candidates for the Rumson and Fair Haven as well as the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School boards of education have officially filed their petitions to run in what is now the November election. The races in Fair Haven and for the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Board of Education are uncontested, while four are competing in the Rumson race for three seats on the nine-member dais.
