Hurricane Sandy's Lost Treasures page on Facebook a resource for those who have lost personal effects
When a plaque that served as a memorial for her late husband went missing from Mantoloking during Hurricane Sandy's wrath, Lori Juliano-Slack said her heart was broken. About two months later, it was spotted about five miles away in Lavallette, stuck in the sand and leaning against a home. Shannon Swift, who runs the Hurricane Sandy's Lost Treasures Facebook page along with Holly Sprick, posted a photo to the social networking website. "Within a day a friend of the owners wrote us to tell us who it belonged to," Swift said. Arrangements were made, and the plaque was back with the family. "It means the world to my son and I to have it. I am not sure how to express my gratitude to you," Juliano-Slack wrote on the page. Her "treasure" is …
Facebook data shows most Jersey users are rooting for the 49ers, switching their allegiance (temporarily) from the Giants or Eagles
It's no surprise that most Facebook users in New Jersey started the football season solidly supporting the New York Giants or Philadelphia Eagles. "While winning seems to matter, NFL teams have local followings that are probably heavily influenced by family ties and/or where a person grew up," according to Facebook, which recently compiled data on users who are fans of an NFL team on the social network. But now that the locals' seasons are over and the Baltimore Ravens are heading to Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, Jersey residents have shifted their allegiance. Perhaps surprisingly, the vast majority of New Jersey Facebook users favor the West Coast 49ers, with fans from Cape May, Salem, Gloucester and Camden counties …
The social-networking site apparently is mulling over the idea.
Facebook is developing technology that would allow those under the age of 13 to access the site under parental supervision, a move that could help bring in a sea of new users for revenue but that could also increase privacy concerns, according to a report in Monday's Wall Street Journal. The technology being tested would allow children's accounts to be tied to their parents' accounts so that parents would decide whom their children could "friend." New kid-friendly features also could allow Facebook and its partners to bill parents for games and other entertainment accessed by their kids. Currently Facebook bars anyone under the age of 13. But several studies show that many kids use Facebook despite the ban, often with their parents' …
A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

The new Facebook timeline feature will let users search for donor registries with "life event" option.
Facebook users can now add when they became an organ donor to their Facebook Timeline, a move that founder Mark Zuckerberg said could help spread awareness and get more people to become donors. Users simply click on adding a “Life Event” to their timeline, and can find the organ donor option under “Health and Wellness.” There they can add the state, date and story on their decision to become a donor. If you are not a donor, you can search your local registry right on Facebook. "Facebook is really about communicating and telling stories… We think that people can really help spread awareness of organ donation and that they want to participate in this to their friends. And that can be a big part of helping solve the crisis that's out there," …
