Littoral Society to Hold Annual Beach Walk Despite Hurricane Sandy

American Littoral Society's usual Sandy Hook New Year's Day Walk moved

The walk must go on. That's the sentiment of the The American Littoral Society, which promotes the study and conservation of marine life, will, for the first time, hold its 35th annual Dery Bennett Memorial New Year’s Day Beach Walk at a location other than its Sandy Hook home base. This year, the group, determined to continue the tradition, but forced to take it elsewhere due to Sandy's wrath on the Hook, will bring the walk to Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Long Branch. “In spite of Sandy, we are headed back to the beach” American Littoral Society Executive Director Tim Dillingham said in a release. “In fact, this year’s walk will provide not only a great way to start the New Year, but a teaching opportunity to discuss the storm, …

Cindy Zipf: Steadfast Voice for the Sea

Clean Ocean Action Executive Director Cindy Zipf represents the sea and sea life in an on-going campaign to improve and maintain the quality of local waters.

Cindy Zipf has always been connected to the sea.  As a child she spent her days "mucking around the Jersey Shore. I was and am a shell-a-holic," she said, "I can't help but pick them up as I walk. And as a kid, I'd turn over every rock and shell to see what was slithering around underneath."  Today, as the Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action (COA), a coalition of organizations wrought to protect the waters around New Jersey and New York, the Rumson native is uncovering the good, the bad and the ugly and using data, science to bring awareness and pressure to those who would knowingly or unknowingly cause it harm. COA was formed in 1984, spun off from the American Littoral Society (ALS), then under the direction of famed sea protector …

Tim Dillingham: Advocate for the Coast

American Littoral Society's executive director brings to his conservation work memories of loyalty to a lifetime of thriving coastline living.

After spending his boyhood adventuring around the world's coastlines, from Spain to Japan, from California to Maryland, Tim Dillingham, executive director of the American Littoral Society (ALS), decided to make its conservation his life's work.  Dillingham ended up taking the place of Derry Bennett, the organization's former longtime director (from 1968 to 2003). Bennett died in 2009, leaving a legacy of his work with the society.  The Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. Since 1961, the year the organization was founded by scientists, scuba divers and fisherman, the American Littoral Society has sought to empower people to care …
