Update, 12:58 p.m.: This story was updated with additional information from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Authorities arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Point Pleasant man in Long Branch, according to Charles Webster, spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO). Alan Bienkowski of Pinecrest Manor in Manchester faces felony murder, robbery and weapons charges, according to the MCPO. Michael M. Wells died of a gunshot wound in the backyard of a Cleveland Avenue home on April 10. Wells arrived at Dutch Prime Foods for work around 4:30 a.m. that day when Bienkowski allegedly confronted him and robbed him at gun point. The return of hundreds of the ancient horseshoe crabs to their familiar spawning sites in Sandy Hook Bay has begun. It's a satisfying sight after the destruction to the shore last fall from Hurricane Sandy. Who knew what to expect? There was a certain amount of vagueness and concern as to how many, if any, horseshoe crabs would show this year, especially given that the loss of shoreline habitat from erosion or the building of bulkheads, beach nourishment projects that can bury and kill adult crabs. Changes in the slope and width of a beach can also affect where and when the crabs gather. Would the aftermath of Sandy have an effect on the mating season? The state urges customers to consult the database before buying a car
The State Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) are urging all customers to consult their database of flood and salvage-titled vehicles before purchasing a car. That database now provides information on 31,000 such vehicles, the State MVC announced on Wednesday. It isn't illegal to sell vehicles with flood or salvaged titles. However, there are specific requirements that ensure potential purchasers are aware of the status of such vehicles, according to the MVC. “Damage sustained by vehicles must be disclosed to prospective buyers,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. “We will hold car dealers accountable for violating our Consumer Fraud Act if they fail to make such disclosures.” The database was …

Swearing study ranked the most and least courteous states in the country.
Third place? We couldn’t do better than #&@$ing third place? New Jersey residents were beaten out by Ohio and Maryland in a survey ranking individuals most likely to drop swear words on a complete stranger during a phone conversation. On the flip side, analysis by the Marchex Institute found that Washington, Massachusetts and Arizona topped the list of state residents least likely to lose their cool. Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries. The mobile advertising company also ranked the most courteous states: South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland. And the least courteous states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Indiana. Closing out National Police week with some memorable moments
As National Police week comes to a close, we look back on some memorable moments in recognition of popular officers in the Rumson-Fair Haven area. Well-liked Fair Haven Police Sgt. Jesse Dykstra was promoted to sergeant not all that long ago. Dykstra was a detective and had risen through the ranks, from dispatcher to special officer to patrolman and up, in record time. He is an R-FH graduate and, as Chief Darryl Breckenridge said, he's known him since he was a kid. Take a look at the never-before-seen video of his promotion.
