Obama and Christie to Visit Jersey Shore on Tuesday

This will be Obama's first visit to Shore since just after Sandy

President Obama and Gov. Christie will visit the Jersey Shore on Tuesday, according to The Record in Bergen County. Herb Jackson of the Record and northjersey.com reports President Obama will visit the Jersey Shore on Tuesday with Gov. Christie. This will be Obama's first visit to the area since Oct. 31, just after the storm struck. More information can be found here.

Rumson Accident Sends One Severely Injured to Jersey Shore Trauma Unit

Van and dump truck collided

An accident near Rumson Country Club this afternoon has sent one person to Jersey Shore University Medical Center's Trauma Unit via MONOC medevac helicopter. The call for the accident came in at 1:19 p.m., Rumson Police Chief Scott Paterson said, when a dump truck and multi-passenger van, both traveling eastbound on Rumson Road near Conover Lane, collided. "We believe, but cannot confirm at this point, that the dump truck was attempting to make a right hand turn onto Conover Lane when it struck the multi-passenger van," Paterson said. "The passenger seated in the right front seat of the van was severely injured and transported to Jersey Shore." Rumsonite, FH Community Garden Volunteer, Betsy Collins Karafin, Dies at 72

Rumson resident Elizabeth "Betsy" Collins Karafin, an avid area volunteer, tennis and golf player, died at her home on May 22, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, at the age of 72. Known as an avid gardener, garage saler and antique collector and repairer, Betsy was a member of St. George's by the River Church, Rumson, and treasurer for the Fair Haven Community Gardens, according to legacy.com. She is survived by: her husband, Barry, of 48 years; her sons, Thomas, of Summit, and Theodore, of S. Orange; her daughter, Amy, of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers, Ronald and David Collins, and a sister, Marilyn Koren, all of NJ; and grandchildren James and Kate. NJ Transit Offers 'Early Getaway' Service for Memorial Day Weekend

In addition to extra trains and buses, two children can ride free with each fare-paying adult.

NJ Transit will be offering extra trains and buses to patrons leaving work early Friday for Memorial Day weekend, according to a press release.  Extra outbound trains will operate on the North Jersey Coast line, which extends into Point Pleasant Beach and ends at Bay Head; the Northeast Corridor, Raritan Valley, Morris and Essex and Port Jervis lines, starting around 1 p.m. Additional buses will also be operating from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on over three dozen bus routes starting around noon, according to NJ Transit.   On Memorial Day, trains will operated on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all lines, according to NJ Transit. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule, Newark Light Rail will operate on a …

Sea Bright Sandy Victim Charged with Defrauding FEMA

A Hurricane Sandy victim from Sea Bright now faces up to five years in prison after being arrested and charged Wednesday with defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of more than $12,000 in Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) grant money, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced. William Nagle, 51, who rented an apartment at 4 Center St., Sea Bright, allegedly bilked FEMA’s Transitional Shelter Assistance program of $12,114.25 in the form of 68 nights worth of lodging at various hotels between Jan. 14 and March 23, 2013. A full plate of information on Fair Haven eateries, present and near future, has been dished up lately. First, in line with the governing body's vision of a Fair Haven flush with outdoor dining, strolling and socializing, more and more tables are popping up on sidewalk space, front yards and sides of restaurants/cafes. In addition to the tables already filling up outside of Tavolo Pronto, the new Balderose Fine Foods Market and the just-approved four tables of two coming soon outside of Kind Burgers, the Borough Council recently approved four tables with 12 chairs outside at Umberto and a five tables with 20 chairs at Fairwinds Deli. Crime Nearby: Shoplifter Nabbed for Stealing Nearly $3K in Belts, Cops Say

Asbury Park man charged with stealing from Garmany in Red Bank

An Asbury Park man has been indicted on charges that he shoplifted nearly $3,000 worth of belts from the Garmany store in Red Bank. Abdus Shahid-Ali, 43, of 100 Monmouth Ave., Asbury Park, was arrested by Red Bank police after he allegedly left the Broad Street store at 6:59 p.m. May 21 with nine leather belts valued at $2,725, according to the arrest complaint warrant. Ali, when confronted by police, then allegedly gave them a false name, the warrant said. During the course of the investigation, police also allegedly found Ali to be in possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, in the form of a "rolled cigarette" in a "small clear bag" in his left sock, according to the warrant. Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty: 'We're Back!'

Gov. Chris Christie, local officials and thousands of shore area residents were on hand Wednesday morning to christen Belmar's rebuilt boardwalk. The 1.3 mile-long boardwalk, which spans the length of the borough, was destroyed Oct. 29 during Superstorm Sandy. Mayor Matt Doherty said crews began working to rebuild it in January and remained on schedule so it could be reopened by Memorial Day weekend.
