Setting the Stage for a 'White Christmas'

Phoenix Productions' version of the Irving Berlin classic opens Friday at the Count Basie Theatre.

It may still be fall, but winter is on the horizon and 'tis the season for Phoenix Productions' opening of Irving Berlin's White Christmas on Friday.

The Phoenix revival of the classic is slated for performances at the Count Basie Theatre on Nov. 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24. Curtain is 8 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday shows and 3 p.m. for Sunday matinees. With its namesake the favorite perennial "White Christmas" song, the musical is based on the film and features 17 Irving Berlin classics, such as "How Deep is the Ocean" and "Blue Skies."

The storyline follows vets Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, who have put together a post-World War II song-and-dance act. The two become romantically interested in a couple of singing sisters "en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil's former Army commander," a show summary on the Phoenix website says.

The rest is musical history.

The Phoenix White Christmas is produced by Tom Martini and directed by Anthony Greco, with musical direction by Bob Sammond and choreography by Drew Wilfrid.
