Volunteers Give Fair Haven Natural Area a Spring Cleaning

Over 24 residents show up for 5th Annual Natural Area Volunteer Work Day.

Over 24 people removed brush and cleared trails at the Fair Haven Natural Area Volunteer Work Day.

The 40 acres of the Haven Fields Natural Area are mostly-wooded and have been set aside as a “natural” resource with trails and a pond. There is a 12-car gravel parking lot located on the north side of Ridge Road. Volunteers met at the Natural Area on Saturday, April 2nd and worked from 9:00-11:00 a.m. to clean up the damage the harsh winter left behind and get the area ready for the nicer weather.

At the annual event, volunteers helped clean up brush throughout the area, free Derry’s Pond from big logs, remove fallen limbs from the meadow and cut back holly on the trails.

Dick Fuller and members of the borough Environmental Commission organized the day. “We have a really great committee that is very active,” said Barbara Bennett, a member of the committee that protects and preserves the Fair Haven Natural Area.

Bennett says that the committee is so active because it is full of people who are passionate for Fair Haven’s special resource. “There are not many towns that have something like this, so we are very lucky,” said Bennett.

Other than protecting and preserving the area, one of the main goals for the group is to educate people about the resource. They do this through events like the work day as well as nature walks, bird watching tours and other informational events.

“We want to make sure that people understand that this is not a park. It is a natural area and we want to try to keep it as natural as possible,” said Bennett.
