Pulling for Injured Cyclist Cole Porter

Friends and family ask that in support of Porter people commit random acts of kindness.

"Love saves the day."

It's what is written on the back of the pink Ride for Cole t-shirts crafted in support of Shrewsbury triathlete and firefighter Cole Porter, who was seriously injured in Sunday's Tour de Fair Haven race.

And the cyclist's family and close friends are asking that, in honor of Porter, people emulate the hospitalized man who they know as one of the most humble, giving individuals around, by committing random acts of kindness. That's all he and his family need right now, friend Tom Vogel said on the PorterHouse Support Group Facebook page dedicated to Porter.

"… So let’s use his example, put a big goofy smile on our faces, talk about something with passion, make someone smile, bust someone’s chops and then lift them up with a helping hand," an excerpt of Vogel's post said.

Thursday, according to other posts by Vogel, Porter underwent surgery "to relieve the pressure in his brain. He remains in critical condition. Keep prayers coming … they are asking that Cole receive no more visitors, due to the risk of infection from the surgery."

In addition, Vogel announced to all supporters that love, support and positive thinking is all that Porter and the family need right now.

"In speaking with Meg this morning, she really appreciates everyone’s efforts, but made it clear that at this time, doing a fundraiser or making meals was not necessary until she gets a better handle on what is needed. I know we have so many caring people that are all about getting things done," another post by Vogel on the Facebook page said.

"Sitting around waiting is not what we do well, at all. For those in the triathlete community, this is like Taper Week & for our brothers in the fire service, it is like being stuck in staging."

There are now nearly 1,000 members of the Facebook page. Countless people from all over country have pledged to run, walk, ride and commit random acts of kindness in Porter's honor.

Requests for the pink t-shirts are pouring in.

There are signs of support all over — at the Shrewbury and Fair Haven firehouses, on houses, lawns and business fronts.

The Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School tower is lit up with pink lights. Pink is Porter's favorite color, because he sees it as sassy, according to posts on the Facebook page.

People, from all accounts, remain dedicated to spreading the love for Porter they feel he has always given selflessly, because, as the shirt says, "Love saves the day."
