Clean Ocean Action's Family Beach Ball

I wanted to spread the word about the great event I attended and supported today: The Clean Ocean Action's Family Beach Ball.

Here it is: my first blog post.  I wanted to spread the word about the great event I attended and supported: The Clean Ocean Action's Family Beach Ball.

Hosted by Ship Ahoy Beach Club, the family event was the scene of delicious food, great music, useful information and minimal landfill waste!

Prior to the event, WasteNot Solutions looked at each waste item generated and considered how to reduce, reuse or recycle it to see how close to a "zero waste" event we could come.

Implementing the food and organic waste recycling, in conjunction with Branches' Catering Green Cuisine initiative and supported by Waste Management’s organic recycling offering, reflects needed progress in addressing the waste often generated at such events.

Kudos to Clean Ocean Action, Branches Catering and Waste Management for working collaboratively to make this happen for the second year in a row.

All disposable items were purchased specifically to be compostable and support organics recycling. Washable dishes were used, bottles/cans recycled, and even the hard to recycle plastic caps were collected by COA for recycling by AVEDA.   Most auction items were placed in reusable shopping bags greatly reducing the plastic cellophane wrap used previously.

I've included a few photos of the inventive uses for the items picked up from the COA Beach Sweeps that were used as table decor around the event.  (Hmmm ... gives me an idea on what to do with some of those caps we collect through Little Silver Point Road's Green Team!)

Please support these efforts that help make our communities a bit "greener" (or "bluer" in the case of the ocean).
