Go With the Flow: Giving In to Town-Wide Events

Fair Haven town-wide yard sale is May 21st. Are you ready?

Charity run races, both running and riding, sidewalk sales and yard sales... It is the ultimate way of hob-nobbing with your neighbors.

When we moved to Fair Haven, 21 years ago, we had the best neighbor  a family could ask for. We lived right next door to Nina Brown, a font of Fair Haven information and inspiration. She taught kindergarten with Viola Sickles at Sickles School, and introduced us to the history of our little borough. Three houses later, and two more additions to our family, we are in a different area of Fair Haven with equally amazing neighbors.

Early on the morning of Saturday, May 21st, Fair Haven will be having its second annual townwide yard sale. It is both an opportunity to make a little money by passing on unwanted items taking up prime real estate in your garage, basement or attic, and the chance to get out early and hunt for some treasure. The sellers will encounter vintage treasure seekers, people who want specific items such as electronics or books, and resellers who will love to take your funky vintage clothing or new and modern furniture and dishware off your hands. It is also a great opportunity to rid your home of  outgrown toys and baby items. As a seasoned "yard sailer", I have a few suggestions for the sellers and the treasure hunters.

For the sellers, I would like to suggest that everything you put out for sale should be fairly clean, set up on tables with like items and well marked with little price tags. Have some super market bags on hand as well as some change (dollar bills and a few fives and tens, because I guarantee that the first few buyers will offer you a fresh $20.00 from the  ATM machine to pay for a 50 cent item).  Smile, relax and enjoy the experience.

I would also like to suggest that the buyers remember a few rules. If you see something you think you might like to buy, pick it up. If you turn away someone else will pick it up and you will lose out. Be polite and ask the seller if they might do better on the price or if the marked price is their best price. Consider parking your car at the end of the street and walking up and down the street.

The last thing I would like to mention is that everyone practice some patience. Fair Haven is an old town with some fairly narrow streets. Traffic will be an issue, so leave early if you need to be somewhere or consider walking or riding a bicycle. Most of all, keep an open mind and remember that most of the people you see really are your neighbors. Hoping for great weather and amazing bargains.
