Clean Ocean Action: The Rally Against Liquified Natural Gas

By Elaine Van Develde

It wasn't a bird in the sky over Sea Bright Public Beach on Thursday. It was a plane — a plane with an environmental message attached.

That message told the story of Clean Ocean Action's fight against the proposed Liquified Natural Gas terminal dubbed Port Ambrose proposed by Liberty Natural Gas. The terminal is slated to sit in deep water roughly 20 miles off the coast of Sea Bright and the surrounding area.

With a comment period underway at official spots closer in proximity to the proposed project, Clean Ocean Action decided to host its own citizens hearing on the subject. The environmentalists raised a tent on the Sea Bright Beach on Thursday afternoon, made literature on the project available and answered questions.

Starting at 4:30 p.m., people rallying against the terminal trickled onto the apt seaside site. Later, Clean Ocean Action members were poised to record any and all comments, using a court reporter and recording devices and submit them to the appropriate authorities.

The bottom line: Environmentalists have fought this battle before and are digging heels deeper and drawing their own lines on the sand against it.
