Week in Sports: Michael Reilly Plays Pivotal Role for Bucs

Red Bank Regional boys soccer hopes to keep momentum going against Holmdel.

Game of the Week: Middletown North vs. South Brunswick – Field Hockey, Nov. 1

It’s not often that a game with a final score of 5-0 can take “Game of the Week” honors, but in the case of Middletown North’s state playoff performance against South Brunswick in the second round, an exception had to be made.

The fifth-seeded Lions made an example out of South Brunswick on Tuesday afternoon, receiving notable contributions from several players. The team had five separate goal-scorers in the win, including Colleen Dean, Devon Freshnock and Jillian Richards, who also recorded three assists collectively. Dana Egan was in goal for the Lions as she recorded her first shutout of the postseason.

Less than a week after he delivered the game-winning assist in the team’s regular season finale, a 2-1 victory over Mater Dei, Red Bank Regional’s Michael Reilly played a pivotal role yet again for the Bucs. In Tuesday’s 2-0 NJSIAA first-round playoff win against Point Pleasant Boro, Reilly scored both of the team’s goals, thanks to assists from teammates Charley Garzon and Max Paris and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Jack Peoble, who saved each of Boro’s five shots on goal.

On Friday, sixth-seeded Red Bank Regional will suit up for its second round opponent, third-ranked Holmdel High School.

Upcoming Game to Watch: Rumson-Fair Haven @ Shore Regional – Boys Soccer, Nov. 4

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs were firing on all cylinders in their first-round matchup against Weequahic on Tuesday afternoon, as they received contributions in the box score from eight different players. Leading the way for Rumson-Fair Haven was Pete Martin, who, in addition to scoring three of his team’s eight goals, also dished out an assist in the victory.

Shore Regional also recorded a shutout in their first-round contest, a 5-0 victory over Hillside High School.

The two teams met previously this season on October 13. The Blue Devils of Shore claimed a 2-1 victory in the midseason clash, and only time will tell if the Bulldogs can avenge the loss.
