Rumson Board Welcomes New Anti-Bullying Policies and Bids Superintendent Final Farewell

Highlights from the Rumson Board of Education meeting on Wednesday July, 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Forrestdale Library.

The Rumson Board of Education discussed the upcoming school year during their meeting at the Forrestdale School and said a final good-bye to Scott Feder as Superintendent on Wednesday night.

In the library of the middle school, the board shared their thoughts on past and future programs, personnel, facilities and operations, finances, and the superintendent’s last report.

Feder addressed the board on updates with the middle school playground, which is still being installed but the blacktop is finished. The superintendent expressed whether it would be cost-effective for the next school year to continue to offer before and after school programs based on last year’s financial gains and losses with the programs. According to Feder, programs ran for the first time last year and the school district lost more money last year than it gained.

Members concluded that before and after school programs should continue into the next year, but board motioned to not allow drop-offs.

The district is stepping up its initiatives in recognizing and preventing bullying; parents of the children involved in reported bullying incidents will now be notified of all claims and teachers are prohibited from handling such matters alone. Also, any reported situations will resort in an investigation.

“You’re accountable for what you should have known,” said Superintendent Feder, who notified the members that staff will also be graded on how well they handle the new legislation.

Under the discussion of personnel, the district has appointed a School Safety Team, composed of teachers, parents, administration, and an anti-bullying specialist. All new appointments for positions such as Affirmative Action officer and Anti Bullying Coordinator and Specialist were all approved.

The final issue of the night was how to honor former teacher Jane Talmage for her 39 years of experience, in which the board suggested having a best attendance award in her name.
