RFH Art Teacher Hosts Show at the Guild of Creative Art to Benefit Women with Cancer

The Healing Power of Art II, a fundraiser for Lin's Linens, features more than 80 pieces of art.

A new charitable organization was launched last fall at an art show entitled The Healing Power of Art.

Nearly a year has gone by, and Lin’s Linens, Inc. has gotten off to a productive start, attracted much media attention and helped many women suffering from cancer by creating nurturing environments where they can heal.

The Healing Power of Art II opened on July 30, 2011 with a reception from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury. The show will run from July 29-August 23 and features more than 80 artworks in a variety of media.

The show was created by Kristen Lanfrank, a member of the Lin’s Linens board and art teacher at . Every teacher in the RFH Art Department and several students have supported Kristen by submitting artwork for the show.

On the creation of this art show, Lanfrank said, “Having the opportunity to organize this art show has been a wonderful experience. I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing artists with some amazing stories told through their art.”

All of the artists exhibiting works have had their lives negatively affected by cancer, either by going through their own medical crises or by enduring the suffering and loss of close family members or friends. Each work has a personally written statement on display beside it explaining how creating the art helped in the healing process.

The Guild of Creative Art generously donated its gallery space and is dividing its commission with Lin’s Linens. Funds raised will be used to create comforting spaces for women as they cope with cancer.

Lanfrank said she is proud of the joint effort to support women with cancer built between the Guild and Lin's Linens, Inc. “Lin's Linens is such a wonderful organization. It is helping women to heal during the toughest battle they will ever face. All donations received are used immediately to create a healing sanctuary for program sisters. All the people involved with Lin's Linens volunteer their time and services," Lanfrank said. "I am very honored and proud to be a board member of Lin's Linens and a member of The Guild of Creative Art."

Lin’s Linens, Inc. was created as a non-profit organization by Liz Balogh, Kristen’s mother and an interior designer, who saw the healing power of a peaceful sanctuary when she created such a space for her sister, Lin Salerno, an artist who has been enduring cancer treatment for many years. Lin’s delight in her new space inspired Liz Balogh to create Lin’s Linens, Inc.

The mission of the group is to support women going through cancer treatment by providing a nurturing environment to promote the positive mind, body and spirit connection which is crucial to the healing process.  Lin’s Linens provides a welcoming retreat in their homes where women can rest after surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, a safe place where the ‘brave face’ can be set aside and a patient can curl up and heal.

Liz Balogh said she is also impressed with the collaboration for such a worthy cause. "Lin's Linens, Inc is proud to partner with the Guild of Creative Art to bring a message of beauty and hope through our Healing Power of Art Show," she said. "I can think of no better way to inform others of our mission to support women in treatment for cancer than through an event such as this."
