Maryrose Caulfield-Sloan brings knowledge and experience as she prepares to lead the school district into greatness.

The newly appointed Rumson Superintendent Maryrose Caulfield-Sloan is no stranger to education and is now prepared to share her wealth of knowledge with the school district.

The Rumson Board of Education approved the contract and appointment of Caulfield-Sloan on Aug. 31 to fill the shoes of the interim Superintendent Bert Ammerman.

“Education is the greatest profession in my mind because you touch the future and are doing something wonderful for children,” said Caulfield-Sloan. “I believe children are a tremendous resource of every family. They are so important and the work we do for them is so valuable. There is so much that I value in the work that goes on here. It’s such a positive coming into Rumson.”

Caulfield-Sloan was attracted to how organized and wonderful the school district is who she said have embraced her with open arms during her hiring process. She said she already feels connected.

As superintendent she plans to build a connection by communicating with parents, staff, administration, and local governments to get a feel of the area and see where people want to move forward.

She knows lots of work has been put forth for the upcoming school year and plans to keep that momentum going to ensure a smooth transaction. She continues to learn as much as possible so she can take the initiative to move forward and build to the next level.

In speaking with district, she plans to take what has been put in place and evaluate it to see where growth is needed.

She’s learned a great deal from the people she’s worked with and hopes to continue to learn and express that information.

For eight years she served as principal at Jefferson Elementary School in Maplewood. For the Union County Schools she was the testing coordinator, staff development specialist and elementary science specialist. She also taught science in the middle and high school level for Nutley. Recently, she was the director of education in Wayne, where she oversaw nine elementary schools.

Throughout college she received numerous educational degrees. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and secondary science at Felician College and later moved on to obtain two master degrees. Her first masters in biochemistry from Montclair State University then at Seton Hall University in administration and supervision. She continued her education at Seton Hall, where she completed her doctorate in educational administration and supervision.

“You want to try and know all the different people, groups and constituents so that you can build relationships,” Caulfield-Sloan. “I think that’s a great challenge, but at the same time it’s one of those great joys of the job. I enjoy people and getting to know what they are about. Their hopes and dreams is really job one.”
