Rumson voters will choice candidates for four Board of Education seats Tuesday.
Three, full, three-year terms are opening on the dais, as is one, unexpired two-year term. Incumbents Margaret Simons, Alitia Faccone and John Connors look to retain their seats with challenger Bill Loughran seeking a full term.
Incumbent Maura Beyer, who was appointed in September to the seat vacated by former board member Colleen Hodge, seeks to finish the two-year term but faces a challenge from Russell Binns.
All candidates filled out questionnaires about their background and candidacies. Click the links below for more information:
Three, three-year terms
Margaret Simons — "I wish to assist in the community goal of delivering the optimal curriculum to our children while offering the proper support to our administrators and teachers to successfully accomplish learning at each child’s ability, all while remaining fiscally prudent with the residents of Rumson’s tax contributions."
Alitia Faccone — "I found that by becoming a member of the Board of Education, I could indeed participate and have a voice in the education received, not only by my children, but by all of our collective community’s children with the goal of effectuating positive change where needed and support the already high quality educational goals already put in place by others who have served before me."
John Connors — "As a concerned parent I want be involved and make sure our children receive the best education possible. As an experienced board member, I have had the opportunity to work with a wonderful group of people who currently serve as board members. Working with the administration and the teachers has been an invaluable experience."
Bill Loughran — "I have always been interested in the work of a board of education, going back to my high school days when I was a student representative to the BOE. I am also a firm believer of giving back to one's community in terms of talent and/or time. I believe I can make a positive contribution to our Board of Education and at the same time set a good example for my children about meaningful community service."
Two-year unexpired term
Maura Beyer — "As a parent of four children in the Rumson school system, I am committed to ensuring the educational opportunities provided to our children are at the highest standards possible."
Russell Binns — "Another impetus for my interest in running is to represent and be an advocate for the residents and children of Rumson and foster improved transparency of the board to such residents. Members of the Board are voted to be the voice of the residents of Rumson. Rumson has a wonderful successful group of residents and they need to feel that their voices are being heard and that the Board is acting in the best interests of them and the students."
