Fair Haven Parents Petition for Full-Day Kindergarten

An online petition started last week asks the district to make full-day Kindergarten available.

Should Fair Haven schools have full-day Kindergarten? A group of area parents believe so, and they have established on online petition to gather support.

Lynn Griffin and Lori Freund started the petition on change.org late last week and have gathered 322 online signatures thus far.

"We know it's a long process to get full-day implemented," Griffin said. "We just wanted the board of education to know that the community supports it."

The petition notes that neighboring districts in Rumson, Middletown and Little Silver provide full-day Kindergarten to students.

Griffin also encouraged parents to attend the Feb. 26 Fair Haven Board of Education meeting at Knollwood Schools. A discussion on full-day Kindergarten is expected to take place at that meeting, she said.

Fair Haven Superintendent Nelson Ribon said the district values parents' input on policy and programs.

"One of the qualities that I admire of our school community is the involvement, passion and support of our parents. Their high level of interest and participation in their child's education are just some reasons why we have great schools," Ribon said in an email to Patch. "I am excited about the work our leadership team is doing to evaluate all of our programs, including Kindergarten, as part of our efforts to further develop the learning opportunities we offer our students on a daily basis."
