Pier Village Boardwalk Repairs to Start

Repairs expected to take 21 days

If you walk the boardwalk or visit Long Branch's Pier Village, you'll see that work to repair the boardwalk at the development will start tomorrow.

A message on the city's website states that work will consist of: preparation of subgrade, grading, geotextile fabric, reinforced concrete slope protection, timber work, pavers, concrete work, repairs of the irrigation system, sand berm, landscaping, railings and other restoration work.

Construction is expected to last about 21 days. The buildings at Pier Village withstood Sandy's wrath, but the boardwalk was the brunt of some damage.

The Long Branch City Council recently awarded a $194,380 contract to K.B.D. Construction LLC for the work. The funds for the repairs are available in the city's Hurricane Sandy emergency appropriations, and the city is expected to be reimbursed by FEMA for cleanup costs such as this.

City officials have said more substantial repairs on the boardwalk south of Pier Village will likely begin next spring, as they continue ponder how it will be rebuilt and reinforced.

Those repairs will be much more costly for the city, but FEMA is also expected to pay for the work. Officials have said the cost to rebuild the boardwalk exactly as it was before Hurricane Sandy destroyed it would be $7.5 million.

FEMA will also pay the city 50 percent of that cost to rebuild the boardwalk in a more resilient fashion, which could include raising it, creating higher bluffs or adding a concrete barrier in front of it.

The Long Branch City Council is expected to choose a new design for the boardwalk in the next few months.
