Lt. Governor Visits Fair Haven Businesses

Kim Guadagno touted post-Sandy loan and grant programs.

By Elaine Van Develde

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno popped in on three Fair Haven businesses on Thursday afternoon.

Why? According to Mayor Ben Lucarelli, the lieutenant governor was impressed with the Fair Haven governing body's ability to hold the line on taxes for the sixth year in a row. She also wanted to tout some post-Hurricane Sandy federally-funded loan and grant programs designed to get businesses back on their feet, thriving and growing.

While Fair Haven was not hit especially hard by Sandy, like neighboring Sea Bright, a loss of electricity for nearly two weeks put businesses in a bind and spurred product and revenue loss in eateries, among other things.

The lieutenant governor is encouraging use of federal money that's been funneled through the state Economic Development Authority to revive businesses in those counties hardest hit by Sandy, such as Monmouth.

Guadagno was joined by Mayor Lucarelli, Administrator Theresa Casagrande, Councilwoman Susan Sorensen, Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon, and business owners as Guadagno toured Fair Haven Hardware, River Road Books and Tavolo Pronto and chatted with the business owners about the post-Sandy business expansion opportunities.

Patch caught up with the lieutenant governor and Fair Haven officials as they chatted at Tavolo about small businesses' value in the state and the Christie Administration's response to Sandy — getting waterways cleared and towns back in operation.

Take a look at the above video for a glimpse into the impromptu discussion. Oh, and the lieutenant governor loved the Tavolo cookies and took a menu home to Monmouth Beach.
