Fair Haven to Dedicate Street to Victims of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

There will be additional signage that read 9/11 Memorial Blvd. added to the intersections on Hance Rd.

Fair Haven Borough will dedicate Hance Rd. to a memorial for the victims of the September 11th attacks.

“We wanted to do something special in light of the fact that it is the 10 year anniversary,” said Councilman Robert Marchese.

At the council meeting on July 11, Councilman Robert Marchese revealed the signs that will be added to Hance Rd. Signs that read 9/11 Memorial Blvd. with an American Flag will go above the current signs at the intersections of the road.

The street name will not be changed, but will be dedicated as a ceremonial memorial. “It will be like how Mechanic Street in Red Bank is now known as Count Basie Way,” said Marchese.

The councilman said he chose Hance Rd. because he wanted it to be visible to the children of Fair Haven as they walk to school every day. “They should be placed somewhere it would be seen by as many children as possible,” said Marchese. “That is why we chose Hance Rd. where our two schools are located.”

Marchese said he collaborated with the families of the four borough residents that were lost during on September 11, 2001. “I spoke to the families about the location and the name,” said Marchese. He said the families of Edmund McNally, Kaleen Pezzuti, Edward Luckett and Todd Pelino were happy with this idea, but there was a request to not have a sign at the intersection of River Rd.

The mayor counted 9 intersections to be included in the dedication at the council meeting including 1st Street, Foreman Street, 2nd Street, Parker Street, Poplar Ave, Jackson Street, 3rd Street, Hunting Lane and Dartmouth Ave.

The council is working to have the signs up and dedicated for this year’s 9/11 Memorial Service.
