Severe thunderstorms accompanied with heavy wind and rain quickly swept over Monmouth County Thursday evening, knocking down wires over the NJ Transit train tracks in Middletown and causing area commuter delays.
According to Sgt. Ernest Volkland, wires approximately 1,000 feet north of the Middletown NJ Transit Station were down on the tracks.
Officers from the Middletown Police Department and the NJ Transit Police Department have secured the scene and are waiting for crews from NJ Transit to arrive and make necessary repairs.
It is unknown how long the tracks will remained blocked. The North Jersey Coast Line is subject to 30-minute delays in both directions because of the downed wires, according to the NJ Transit Web site.
Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
