Wanted: Handguns, Shotguns and Rifles. No Questions Asked.

A countywide gun buyback program to get firearms off the streets is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at locations in Rumson and Asbury Park.

Anyone can anonymously surrender a weapon without having to answer questions about their identity or how they came into possession of a weapon, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. 

Cash will be paid for various weapons turned in at the surrender points: $200 for an assault weapon; $100 for handguns; and $25 for shotguns and rifles. Ammunition, pellet and BB guns may be surrendered at the locations but there will be no compensation for those items.

The buybacks are funded through criminal forfeiture funds. 

All weapons should be unloaded and transported safely, in accordance with the law, say authorities. For additional information and directions, call (800) 533-7443.

The address of the Rumson Police Department is 80 East River Road. Firearms are also accepted at the Asbury Park Satellite Office of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office located at 710 Main St. in Asbury Park. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. 

The gun buyback program is sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office and the Monmouth County Police Chiefs’ Association.

Last year 1,799 guns -- including 15 assault weapons -- were turned in during the 2013 buyback programs held in Asbury Park, Keansburg and Rumson. 

The addition of the Rumson location in 2013 was due to an anonymous donation of $25,000 from someone who stipulated that the funding be contingent upon the use of Rumson as an alternate drop-off, said Charles Webster of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
