Storms Leave 9,000 Without Power

Howell, Freehold Township hit hardest.

Heavy winds downed wires across Monmouth County during Thursday’s severe thunderstorm, leaving more than 9,000 residents without power as of 8:50 p.m., according Jersey Central Power & Light’s (JCP&L) outage map.

JCP&L employees are out assessing the storms' damage, according to company spokespman Ron Morano.

"Crews are working now and will be working throughout the night," Morano said.

The Rumson-Fair Haven area was unscathed; but, nearby in Shrewsbury Township and Borough, 400 were left in the dark. And, over the bridge in Middletown, 255 were without power as of the last check.

As with the last summer storm to strike the area, western Monmouth County was hardest hit. Over 2,300 Howell residents are in the dark. Some 1,300 outages were reported in Freehold Township and 951 in Marlboro. JCP&L reported 482 customers without service in Millstone

Neptune had nearly 1,000 households left without power and Tinton Falls had more than 1,600 and Manalapan had 104.
