Sea Bright Man Indicted on Sandy-Related Fraud Charge

A Sea Bright man has been indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury on a charge stemming from a post-Hurricane Sandy incident wherein he allegedly defrauded the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of more than $12,000 in Transitional Shelter Assistance grant money, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.

The indictment, handed up on Monday afternoon, alleges that William Nagle, 51, a former tenant of an apartment at 4 Center St., Sea Bright, bilked FEMA's Transitional Shelter Assistance Program by seeking out 68 nights' worth of temporary housing, valued at $12,114.25, in various hotels from Jan 14 to March 23, 2013 when he did not need it.

Records showed that Nagle's third-floor Center Street apartment, though initially damaged by Sandy flooding and deemed uninhabitable, was cleared for occupancy by Sea Bright code enforcement officials on Dec. 29, 2012, about a month before he sought the housing assistance.

Nagle had been arrested last month for the fraud after an investigation was launched by the Monmouth County Superstorm Sandy Fraud Task Force.

The indictment officially charges him with with one count of third-degree theft by deception.

An indictment is not a conviction, but represents a formal charge by a grand jury.
