Rumson Police: Slow Down on Bingham

Speeders on Bingham Avenue

By Elaine Van Develde

Slow Down! Slow Down! Slow Down!

The digital sign on Bingham Avenue in Rumson says it all — Slow Down!

Speeding has been a problem on the road, most notably since the start of summer, Police Chief Scott Paterson said.

The speed limit is 35 miles per hour. But, drivers, said Paterson, have been barreling through lately. Police saw the spike in speeding, had been stopping a lot of people and decided a clamp-down was warranted, he added.

So, Paterson said, the digital sign was moved to Bigham to make sure people are cognizant and slowing down for safety in what is an all-residential area with the high school bordering it.

The sign, between Ridge and Rumson roads on Bingham, flashes the "Slow Down!" message in threes and then clocks and shows your actual speed.

"People should know that we are very aware of the speeding in that area in particular right now and we're strictly enforcing the limit," Paterson said.

The speed limit on West River Road, a county road, near Sugar Maple was recently reduced to 30 miles per hour from 35. There are no similar plans for Bingham.
