Fair Haven 20-Year-Old Arrested for Alleged Store Glass-Smashings

Jonathan P. Chapin also faces obstruction charge and third degree burglary charge in Red Bank.

A 20-year-old Fair Haven man has been arrested on criminal mischief and obstruction charges stemming from two recent borough storefront glass-smashing incidents.

Fair Haven Police Patrolman William Lagrotteria arrested Jonanthan P. Chapin, of 128 Maple Ave., on Sept. 14 after he allegedly wielded a sweater-wrapped hatchet and smashed the glass front door Krauser's and kicked in the front glass window of Bike Haven, the complaint warrant said.

The cost of damage to each store was estimated at $2,000, according to the report.

Police said in the report that Chapin allegedly admitted to the incidents of criminal mischief during an interview.

Chapin also faces an obstruction charge because, according to the complaint warrant, after police conducted an interview and attempted to place him under arrest, he allegedly refused to place his hands behind his back to be handcuffed.

Bail for the obstruction charge was set at $10,000 with no 10 percent option, by Judge James M. Newman.

Bail for each criminal mischief incident was set at $2,500, with no 10 percent option, by Judge Newman.

Chapin was also arrested for allegedly burglarizing the Red Bank Welsh Farms by smashing in the front glass door at about 2 a.m. the same day.

His bail for that third-degree crime was set at $11,000.

Chapin was slated to appear in court on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m.
