Parents on Alert for Suspicious Person Who Might Target School Children

Have you seen any strangers approach children? Rumson police are taking precautions after incidents in Eatontown and Long Branch.

Superintendent of Schools Maryrose Caulfield-Sloan sent a letter to parents today alerting them to an increased presence around schools following incidents in Long Branch and Eatontown where children were allegedly approached by a man in a car.

You can read more about the incidents here.

This is a copy of the letter from the superintendent sent to Patch by a parent:

The Rumson Police Department has notified us about two incidents that have occurred in neighboring towns:  Eatontown and West Long Branch.  Specifically, there have been two occurrences involving a white male in a black car who has approached children in a suspicious manner.

In order to provide additional security, the Rumson Police Department will be vigilant in patrolling bus stops before and after school.  We urge you to take this opportunity to remind your child of the importance of being aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious people or events to the Rumson Police Department and / or nearest trusted adult.

We have met with students today in order to have a dialogue about the importance of safety, in general terms (see Principal’s Safety Tips Letter sent home today via backpacks for the tips we shared); however, we did not share specifics about the aforementioned incidents.

The Rumson Police Department will continue to collaborate with the school in order to keep us abreast of any additional safety concerns.  Thank you for assisting us in keeping our children safe.

Sincerely,

Maryrose Caulfield-Sloan, Ed.D.
