Overnight Car Thefts in Rumson

Police believe the thefts are connected to a rash of similar vehicle thefts throughout the county and state.

By Elaine Van Develde

Two cars were stolen from Rumson residences within the same proximity sometime overnight Wednesday going into Thursday, and police are alerting area residents to beware and lock up.

"The cars — a BMW and an Infinity — were parked at private residences on Wardell and Post roads," Rumson Police Detective Chris Isherwood said. "The keys were left in the unlocked cars. We haven't seen this sort of thing happen since February of 2012."

But, the theft of high end cars has been prevalent all over Monmouth County and the state, he added.

"We strongly believe this incident is connected (to a larger car theft ring)," Isherwood said.

In the meantime, police advise taking the following precautions:

• Keep vehicles locked at all times, particularly overnight;
• Do not keep valuables in your vehicle, particularly visible through a window;
• Never keep a primary or valet key in your vehicle;
• Keep exterior light’s on overnight in the area of your vehicles.
• Call the Rumson police at 732-842-0500, or 9-1-1 if you see or hear any suspicious vehicles or people by your home.
