Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Launches Corruption Tip Line

Opportunities for fraud and misconduct may increase in the wake of Sandy.

Monmouth residents who suspect corruption by government officials now have a direct line into which they can blow the whistle.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) launched a tip line and e-mail address on Friday to take reports of fraud, corruption and abuse by local government agencies.

“The large majority of public officials render honest and faithful service. But we need the public to help us hold accountable those who betray the public’s trust by committing crimes or using their official positions for their own personal gain and enrichment,” acting Prosecutor Christopher J. Grammiccioni said in a press release issued by the MCPO.

While the office routinely conducts investigations into allegations of fraud or misconduct on the part of public officials, prosecutors are looking to take a more aggressive approach in the wake of superstorm Sandy, according to the release.

The rebuilding effort will bring an increased flow of financial assistance and projects going out to public bid. The MCPO press release stated that opportunities for misuse of government funds, bribery, embezzlement, or corruption in the contract and bidding process may increase with the availability of these additional funds.
