Man Facing Assault Charges After Park Fight

Next door in Red Bank: Police allege that man hit officer with closed fist at park that area people frequent.

There was a fight next door in Riverside Gardens Park last week; and, a Florida man is facing several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, stemming from it, police said.

Red Bank police arrested Andrew C. Collins, 28, of Orange Park, Fla., on Dec. 16 following a reported fight at the West Front Street park after Collins “purposely and knowingly caused a public inconvenience and alarm” by engaging in a public fight at the park at 2:06 a.m., police reported in the complaint warrant.

When police tried to break up the fight, they allege that Collins, who was allegedly in possession of a silver husky box cutter “that served no legitimate purpose,” resisted arrest by striking the arresting officer with a closed fist, according to the warrant.

Collins was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He was held on $27,500 bail with no 10 percent option. His first appearance in municipal court is slated for Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m.

I can't believe that this is the only kinda news you can find to write about. Do you just read through public record to see how bad you can make ones life sound? How bout writing about the troops over seas or something positive instead of bashing a mans life for everybody to see. Why don't you tell everybody about how I volunteered to come to your city to help clean up after hurricane Sandy or how I'm an Iraq combat veteran who honorably served his country. Why isn't there any mention about how I was being jumped and the police officer in question never announced himself as being an officer? When you have two guys on top of you pounding away and another guy grabs your leg, I'm sorry but human reaction is to do whatever you can to survive.

I feel bad for kicking the officer in the face, I sincerely do but I'm not sure why he needed to make things sound so bad in the report by saying I punched him, all you would have to do is listen to the in car recorder and you would hear him say I kicked him, not punched! I understand he was upset but you don't just go messing with people's lives like this. I have never been arrested for any violent crime and this article portrays me to be some kinda criminal. The box cutter was in my pocket from work that day, I never once took it out or threatened to use it, in fact I forgot it was even there. I guess working 7 days a week 16 hours a day will do that to you, not only that but where I'm from there is nothing wrong with having a box cutter in your possession. I am sorry to the officer who was kicked and for the whole situation in general, I wish it never happened. Bill Dowd, I'll tell you what the hell this world is coming to, Its coming to a world where people believe everything they read in the news cause for whatever reason if CNN or whoever writes it, it must be true. The writer of this article should be ashamed for diminishing ones character without even knowing the facts. I don't know anybody in Rumson and people from my town don't even know about this situation but I am truly embarrassed and appalled by the way you've made me out to be in your article. I'm not quite sure how you sleep at night.
