Fair Haven 20-Year-Old Indicted on Burglary, Criminal Mischief Charges

Jonathan Chapin also allegedly resisted arrest.

A 20-year-old Fair Haven resident has been indicted on burglary, criminal mischief and hindering apprehension charges stemming from a string of incidents in Fair Haven and Red Bank in September.

Jonathan P. Chapin, of 80 Parker Ave., was arrested on Sept. 14 after he allegedly smashed the glass in at the Red Bank Welsh Farms and burglarized the store, then smashed the glass front door of the Fair Haven Krauszer's, causing an estimated $500 in damage, and also smashed the front glass window of Bike Haven in Fair Haven, also causing $500 in damage, the indictment, signed by Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni, said.

Chapin, according to police reports, used a sweater-wrapped hatchet to smash in the Krauszer's storefront and kicked in the Bike Haven window.

Chapin, the same night, allegedly hindered his own apprehension by giving false information to the police, the indictment added. Police records said that Chapin also refused to place his hands behind his back to be handcuffed.

The charges in the indictment are as follows: one count of first-degree burglary, a third-degree crime; two counts of criminal mischief, fourth-degree crimes; and one count of hindering apprehension, a fourth-degree crime.

* An indictment does not constitute a conviction. It represents a decision of a Monmouth County grand jury to prosecute the charges.
