Crime Nearby: Shoplifter Nabbed for Stealing Nearly $3K in Belts, Cops Say

Asbury Park man charged with stealing from Garmany in Red Bank

An Asbury Park man has been indicted on charges that he shoplifted nearly $3,000 worth of belts from the Garmany store in Red Bank.

Abdus Shahid-Ali, 43, of 100 Monmouth Ave., Asbury Park, was arrested by Red Bank police after he allegedly left the Broad Street store at 6:59 p.m. May 21 with nine leather belts valued at $2,725, according to the arrest complaint warrant.

Ali, when confronted by police, then allegedly gave them a false name, the warrant said.

During the course of the investigation, police also allegedly found Ali to be in possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, in the form of a "rolled cigarette" in a "small clear bag" in his left sock, according to the warrant.

He was charged with shoplifting and hindering apprehension and is scheduled to appear in Red Bank Municipal Court on May 23 at 8:30 a.m.

Ali was held on $22,500 bail, set by Judge William Himelman, with no 10 percent option.
