Alleged Rumson Bicycle Thief Nabbed

The bikes were stolen earlier in the month.

A few high-end bicycles went missing in Rumson earlier in the month; and police have arrested a Sea Bright man on charges that he allegedly stole the bikes and sold them out of town.

Detective Chris Isherwood arrested Thomas A. Rehders, 23, of 32 Village Rd., Sea Bright, and charged him with four counts of theft of moveable property after an investigation that revealed that Rehders allegedly stole four bikes — one on Sept. 4 and three others on Sept. 10 — and sold three of them in Neptune, Neptune City and Ocean Township, according to the complaint warrants.

Rehders allegedly stole the first, a specialized brand men's bicycle, valued at $1,500, but did not resell it, the warrant said.

Then, on Sept. 10, according to the complaint, he allegedly stole a Cannondale R800 54CM bike valued at $1,236 from a Rumson resident and sold it for $180 in Neptune City.

The same day, it added, he also allegedly stole a Giant OCR silver bike valued at $600 and sold it in Neptune for $30 and a 24-inch Dolce women's bike, which he sold for $250 in Ocean Township.

All are third-degree crimes for which Rehders' bail was set at a total of $15,000.

His first court appearance is slated for Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. in Rumson Municipal Court.
