Service for Native Rumsonite, Edward Sherman, on Saturday

Service and burial slated for Saturday


There will be a memorial service Saturday for native Rumson resident Edward M. Sherman, who died at 91 on July 26 and his wife, Frances Sherman, who died in December of 2012.

Sherman passed away while living in Chino Valley, AZ. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Frances Sherman, who passed away on Dec. 19, 2012.
Frances was born in Red Bank and grew up in Queens, NY until she married Edward in 1947. She worked at the family business, at the General Diaper Service, Morgan Guarantee and Trust in Manhattan, and other part-time jobs after her children were grown.

Born in Rumson in 1921, Ed was a World War II Coast Guard veteran. He retired, after 37 years of service, from the NJ Bell Telephone Co. in 1983, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Ed was also a life member of the Oceanic Hook & Ladder Co. and a member of the Rumson Fire Police. He was chief of Oceanic Hook & Ladder in 1959. He is remembered as always civic-minded and forever tied to Rumson, NJ.

The couple is survived by: children, Edward A. Sherman, of Miami, FL, and Germaine Costner, of Chino Valley, AZ; and grandson, Jeff Allen of Lakeside, CA.

A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m., with a 10 a.m. memorial service at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank. The service will be followed by a burial of cremated remains and committal service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown at 11:30 a.m.
